CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College softball team played a doubleheader this afternoon against the Nittany Lions of Penn State Hazleton. The Phoenix (2-3-1) earned their first two wins of the season over the Nittany Lions (5-8) by scores of 7-3 and 4-3.
Game 1: Junior
Megan Potter (Hagerstown, Md., South Hagerstown) got things started for Wilson as she was able to get out of the top of the first scoreless. In the bottom of the second inning, junior
Alison Shockey (Greencastle, Pa., Greencastle-Antrim) was able to drive in sophomore
Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, Pa., Greencastle-Antrim) on a single to center field, making the score 1-0 in favor of the Phoenix. After a scoreless top of the third, Wilson was able to add another run, in the bottom part of the inning, off a freshman
Taylor Durant (Woodinville, Wash., Monroe) double to left that drove in sophomore
Amber Rexrode (Annville, PA., Annville Cleona). The Nittany lions would go on to tie the game up at two, in the top of the fourth inning.
Later on, in the bottom of the fifth,
Durant got things started by driving in a run, tipping the score to 3-2. In the very next at bat,
Carty was able to drive in 3 runs as she homered to deep center field, bringing the score to 6-2 in favor of the Phoenix. Later in the inning,
Shockey was a able to add another run. Wilson would score 5 runs on 5 hits in the fifth inning. The Phoenix would march to a 7-3 victory in game one.
Inside the Box Score: Potter would earn her first win on the season as she would pitch a complete game. Wilson was able to score seven runs off of eight hits while holding their opponent to just three runs on eight hits.
Carty would finish game one hitting 2-3 with a homerun and three RBIs.
Durant and
Shockey would also both go 2-3 with two and one RBIs respectively.
Game 2: Sophomore
Daphne Buzard (Kane, PA., Cocalico) was on the mound for Wilson as she was able to retire the side in order to start the game. Picking up the action in the top of the third, Penn State was able to gather two runs on three hits, as they were able to jump on the scoreboard first. The Phoenix would respond in the bottom half of the inning as
Durant singled to right field, driving in
Rexrode, making the score 2-1 in favor of the Nittany Lions. The same situation would happen in the bottom of the fifth,
Durant would double this time, driving in
Rexrode again, evening the game up at 2 apiece.
Later on, in the top of the sixth, the Nittany Lions would climb back on top as they were able to score another run that brought the score to 3-2 in their favor. Wilson would respond immediately in the bottom part of the inning by tying the game up at three off a sophomore
Meghan Bradley (Warrington, PA., Central Bucks South) sacrifice fly that would drive in a run.
Potter would come in to close the game out as she was able to retire the top of the seventh in order. In the bottom of the seventh, freshman QUILLEN was able to score off a wild pitch, giving the Phoenix the 4-3 victory.
Inside the Box Score: Potter would get credit for the win, her second of the season.
Durant would finish hitting 3-4 with two doubles and two RBIs while
Rexrode would finish hitting 4-4. Wilson would finish the game scoring four runs on nine hits while holding their opponents to three runs off six hits.
Up Next: The Phoenix will be back in action tommorow afternoon as they get set to take on Penn State Harrisburg (10-5) in a doubleheader starting at 3:00 p.m.
