Express Zip Past Phoenix


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.- The Phoenix men's volleyball team took the court at home for the last time this season against the Express of Wells College in a NEAC match. The game was also the last time seniors Allen Bull (New Freedom, Pa., Susquehannock), Aaron Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa., Commonwealth Connections Academy), Evan Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa., Commonwealth Connections Academy) and Zachary McMaster (Gettysburg, Pa., New Oxford) would play in front of the Phoenix faithful. Wells (19-8, 4-3 NEAC) defeated the Phoenix (4-13, 1-6 NEAC) in straight sets with scores of 25-11, 25-21 and 25-19. 

How It Happened: The Express got off to a hot start in the first set, jumping out to an 8-2 lead and later extending their advantage to 16-8. Wells went on to score the next 9 of 12 points to take the first set, 25-11. The Phoenix finished the first game with 8 kills and 8 errors on 26 attempts. Aaron Hoke and Zachary McMaster combined for all 8 Wilson kills. 

The Phoenix played with more fire in the second set as they were able to hold a 9-8 lead early on. After trading points, Wells grabbed a 12-11 lead and preceded to score 4 of the next 5 points to go up 16-12. The Phoenix rallied back however, and were able to tie the game at 21 later on in the game. Wells responded to the Phoenix late momentum and scored four consecutive points to win 25-21. Wilson struck for 9 kills with 5 errors on 32 attempts in the second set and once again Aaron Hoke and Zachary McMaster combined for all 9 kills, with Hoke having 4 and McMaster having 5. 

The Third set saw Wells jump out to an 11-6 lead over the Phoenix and after the two teams went back-and-forth for several points, the Express led 15-11. The Phoenix were unable to come from behind in the final set and ultimately fell 25-19 to drop the match in 3 sets. Wilson had 9 kills in the final set on 27 attempts. Aaron Hoke finished with 7 kills in the set. 

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix totaled 26 kills in the match and registered 2 aces and 33 digs. Aaron Hoke finished with 16 kills on 37 attempts while also having 13 digs. Zachary McMaster had 9 kills on 24 attempts with Ian Firestone (York, Pa., York Suburban) tallying 26 assists and Evan Hoke finishing with 10 digs.

Up Next: Wilson will travel to the College of St. Elizabeth (4-11, 0-6 NEAC) on Saturday for a 2:00 p.m. start against the Eagles.
