Phoenix March Past Mighty Macs

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.- The Wilson College men's volleyball team played host to the Mighty Macs of Immaculata University this afternoon in a nonconference matchup. The Phoenix (3-4, 1-2 CSAC) played tough throughout the match and ended up sweeping the Mighty Macs (0-9, 0-5 CVC) three sets to none with scores of 25-12, 25-19, and 25-19. 

How it Happened: After trading points in the opening minutes of the first set, senior Aaron Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa., Commonwealth Connections Academy) stepped up to serve. Hoke was able to deliver two-straight aces, that would help push Wilson out in front. The Phoenix were able to jump out to a 13-7 lead before Immaculata called a timeout to try and regain their composure. Wilson would respond by going on a 7-2 run, that brought the score to 20-9, before the Mighty Macs called another timeout. Senior Allen Bull (New Freedom, Pa., Susquehannock) would help secure the first set for the Phoenix as he was able to serve up an ace, bringing the first set to a conclusion, 25-12. 

In the second set, Immaculata was able to jump out to an early 6-3 lead. The Blue and White fought their way back and were able to get within one point, thanks to an ace served by junior Oliver Perry (London, England, Okanagan Secondary). The Mighty Macs would push back in front to a 10-7 lead. After pulling within one point, yet again, junior Dan Perry (London, England, Okanagan Secondary) was able to tie things up at 10 a piece after serving an ace. Wilson would close the set out on a 15-9 run, that helped propel them to victory in the second set, 25-19. 

Wilson would start the third and final set in commanding fashion, as they were able to storm out to a 9-5 lead. Immaculata would not lie down, they were able to make things interesting by pulling within one-point, bringing the score to 15-14. The Phoenix responded by going on a 6-2 run that brought the score to 24-16. They would go on to win the set by a score of 25-19, which helped push them to victory three sets to none.

Inside the Box Score: Aaron Hoke led Wilson with 16 kills, while senior Zachary McMaster (Gettysburg, Pa., New Oxford) finished with 10. Junior Ian Firestone (York, Pa., York Suburban) was able to rack up 28 assists on the day and SeniorEvan Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa., Commonwealth Connections Academy) led the Phoenix on defense as he finished with 15 digs. The Phoenix finished with 35 kills against 19 errors on 88 attempts while their opponents finished with 11 kills against 11 errors on 60 attempts. 

Up Next: Quick turnaround for the Phoenix as they will get ready to host the Thunder of Trine University on Tuesday, March 5, at 7:00 p.m.
