Phoenix Lose One, Tie One at Randolph

LYNCHBURG, Va.- The Phoenix softball team took on the Randolph College Wildcats this afternoon in a non-conference doubleheader. Wilson (0-3-1, 0-0 CSAC) dropped the first game to the Wildcats (9-4-1, 0-0 ODAC) 9-2 and tied in the second game with the game being called due to darkness. 

Game One:

The Wildcats struck for three runs in the first inning, after scoring on a Phoenix error and then slapping a two-run single to take a 3-0 lead. The Phoenix were able to answer back in the top of the third after Taylor Durant (Woodinville, Wash., Monroe) reached on a fielders choice that scored Amber Rexrode (Annville, PA., Annville Cleona). Two batters later, Chloe Perrin (Milton, Pa., Milton) scored on a wild pitch and the Phoenix trailed 3-2.

The hosts waisted no time responding, knocking in two more runs in the next inning to take a 5-2 lead and then tacking up two more in the bottom of the fourth to go up 7-2. The Phoenix were unable to get back into the game as the Wildcats shutdown the Wilson offense from the third inning on, holding the Phoenix to just five hits. Randolph scored two more in the sixth inning and went on to win the first contest 9-2. 

Inside the Box Score: Wilson mustered two runs on six hits while leaving 10 runners on base in game one. Alison Shockey (Greencastle, Pa., Greencastle-Antrim) led the team with three hits in four plate appearances while Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, Pa., Greencastle-Antrim) finished with two hits in four at bats. Taylor Durant collected the only Phoenix RBI for the game. 

Game Two: 

Wilson scored first in the second game of the doubleheader when Taylor Durant plated Chloe Perrin with a single, but the Wildcats would tie the game at one in the bottom half of the first inning. Randolph went on to take a 2-1 lead in the second inning after belting a home run to left field. 

After two scoreless innings for both teams, the Phoenix tied the game at two after a Randolph error allowed Jenna Carty to score. The Wildcats once again responded in the bottom half after scoring a run on a fielders choice. Wilson gained a 4-3 edge in the top of the sixth when Jenna Carty hit a one out single to right that plated two runs. In the bottom of the sixth the Wildcats knocked in a run on a sacrifice fly that would tie the game at four and with one inning left to play the game was called due to darkness and the two teams would finished tied at four. 

Inside the Box Score: Wilson finished the second game with four runs on eight hits and would rack up nine walks in the game. Jenna Carty went 2 for 4 with 2 RBIs while Chloe Perrin and Taylor Durant both went 2 for 3 with Durant collecting 1 RBI. Daphne Buzard (Kane, Pa., Cocalico) threw 5.1 innings for the Phoenix giving up four runs on eight hits. 

Up Next: Wilson will host York College (7-5, 0-0 CAC) this Sunday in a non-conference doubleheader beginning at 1:00 p.m.
