Women's Hoops Trounces Tigers


WASHINGTON, D.C.- Last night the Wilson women's basketball team defeated the Trinity of Washington, D.C. Tigers for the second time this season. With the win the Phoenix improve to 15-8 on the season and are 8-6 in conference play heading into the final week of the regular season. 

How It Happened: The Tigers started the game leading 5-3 but saw their small lead quickly disappear after a 9-0 Phoenix run. Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa., Annville-Cleona) started the run with a fast break layup and after a Kai Wyatt (Baltimore, Md.) free throw, Singer connected on another layup. Tioleaoauli Posiulai (Waipahu, Hawaii., University Laboratory School) then knocked down back-to-back jumpers to give the Phoenix a 12-5 lead after the first quarter. In the second quarter the Phoenix led the Tigers 15-10 with 8 minutes left. Wilson preceded to finish the quarter outscoring the Tigers 13-4 and taking a 28-14 lead into the half. Kai Wyatt and Michaela Singer totaled 9 of the 16 Phoenix points in the period. 

Wilson came out of the half looking to take complete control of the game. The Phoenix erupted for 21 points in the third quarter and were able to hold the Tigers to just 2 points. Michaela Singer led the team with 7 points in the quarter while also tallying 4 steals. Amber Watkins (Honesdale, Pa, Honesdale) also added 5 steals to contribute to the 10 total in the quarter. Heading into the final period the Phoenix held a commanding 49-16 lead. The fourth quarter was all Phoenix again. Wilson outscored the Tigers 21-4 in the quarter and walked away with a 70-20 victory. 

Inside the Box Score: Wilson shot 34% from the field and just 16% from three in the game. Michaela Singer. Kai Wyatt ended the game with 18 points and 5 steals. L'Shana Cobey (Silver Spring, Md., Montgomery Blair) had a big game finishing with a double-double, scoring 10 points and grabbing 13 boards. Tioleaoauli Posiulai also scored in double figures, finishing with 14 points and 9 rebounds. The Phoenix forced 38 turnovers in the game that led to 32 points on the other end. Wilson also snagged 25 offensive rebounds leading to 18 second-chance points. 

Up Next: The Phoenix will host Notre Dame of Maryland University (11-11, 8-5 CSAC) this Wednesday at 7:00 p.m. in a CSAC contest.
