Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Phoenix Wrangle Gators

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa,- The Wilson College women's basketball team was in action tonight as they faced-off against the Gators of Notre Dame of Maryland University in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) showdown. The Phoenix (15-9, 9-6 CSAC) took down the Gators (12-12, 9-6 CSAC) by a score of 54-49.

How It Happened: Wilson opened the game up on a 10-2 run. Senior Kai Wyatt (Baltimore, Md., Md Acad Tech & Hlth Sci) and sophomore Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa., Annville-Cleona) each knocked-down a three while senior Amber Watkins (Honesdale, Pa, Honesdale) and freshman Tori Cole (Middleburg, Fla., Orange Park) each connected on shots in the paint. The two opponents would spend the rest of the quarter fighting for possession and trading buckets. The Gators, however, would close the gap to just three points and finish the quarter trailing 16-13.

In the second quarter, Notre Dame was able to flip the script and jump out to a two point lead early on. Freshman Tioleaoauli Posiulai (Waipahu, Hawaii., University Laboratory School) would respond in a big way as she was able to tie the game up at 18 with a layup off a Singer assist. Later on, with the game tied at 20 apiece, Wilson would close out the quarter on a 9-3 run. This time Wyatt was able to add two more three pointers while Singer added another one herself, giving the Phoenix a 29-23 lead at the half.

Both teams would continue to trade points in the third quarter of play, with the Gators pulling within three points. Wilson was able to push their lead back to eight thanks to senior Amber Watkins (Honesdale, Pa, Honesdale), who hit a jumper, and Wyatt, who added another three. The Phoenix would enter the final quarter of play leading, 42-36.

Notre Dame started the fourth quarter out on a 5-0 run that cut the Wilson lead to just two points. Senior Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fla., South Fort Myers) and L'Shana Cobey (Silver Spring, Md., Montgomery Blair) helped extend the Phoenix lead to six after they were each able to knockdown layups. Things remained neck-and-neck throughout the quarter with the Gators cutting the Wilson lead to just one point with just over a minute and a half remaining. That's when Purvis was able to sink a huge jumper that helped put the Phoenix back in control. Kai Wyatt would knockdown all of her free-throws to close out the game and give Wilson a 54-49 victory.

Inside the Box Score: All of Wilson's players contributed in the scoring column tonight; Wyatt would lead the Phoenix with 23 points, Singer finished with nine, all of which came from three's, while Purvis finished with seven. The Blue and White finished shooting 32% from the floor while their opponent shot 30%. The big difference came beyond the arc, Wilson finished shooting 36% while holding their opponent to 29%.
