Women's Hoops Torch Nittany Lions


Mont Alto, Pa. - The Wilson College women's basketball team was back on the road for a non-conference match-up with Penn State Mont Alto this evening. The Phoenix (13-8) topped the Nittany Lions (8-13) by a final score of 53-41.  

How It Happened: The Phoenix offense got going with a pair of three-pointers by senior Kai Wyatt (Baltimore, MD) and sophomore Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa., Annville-Cleona) for the early 6-2 lead. After growing the lead to as many as seven points in the opening quarter, the Nittany Lions battled back to pull within four points at 17-13 at the end of the quarter. The second quarter saw the hosts tie the game at 23-23 before another three-pointer by Wyatt put the Phoenix back on top 26-23 midway through the session. Neither team would score a point during the final three plus minutes of the half and the Phoenix took the 26-23 lead into the intermission. In the third quarter, the Phoenix pushed the lead to ten points on a three-pointer by Singer to make the score 35-35 midway through the quarter. However, the Nittany Lions would claw their way back in and cut the deficit to four points and trailed 41-37 heading to the fourth quarter. The final quarter was all Phoenix as senior Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl, South Fort Myers) grabbed an offensive rebound and put it back in for the first points of the period. Later, a basket by freshman Tori Cole (Middleburg, FL, Orange Park) gave the Phoenix a 50-37 lead with 4:32 to play. A solid defensive performance in the final quarter held the Nittany Lions to just four points as the Phoenix cruised to the 53-41 victory.

Inside the Box Score:  The Phoenix shot 32% from the field while holding the Nittany Lions to 24% shooting. Purvis had a double-double with 11 points and 16 rebounds. Singer has a game high 19 points and Wyatt added 18 points.
