Yellow Jackets Sting Phoenix


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.- The Phoenix men's volleyball team played host to the Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College today in a non-conference match. The Phoenix (2-4, 1-2 NEAC) took the match to five sets but were unable to come out victorious as the Yellow Jackets (7-6, 3-1 CVC) defeated Wilson, 3-2.

How It Happened: The first-set was controlled by the Yellow Jackets as they were able to strike for 13 kills on 28 attempts to take the first frame, 25-18. The second set was a close back-and-forth battle but Randolph-Macon prevailed once again this time 25-21 despite only having 3 kills. The Phoenix hurt themselves in the second-set, tallying 21 errors that led to Yellow Jacket points.

The Phoenix responded nicely in the third-set, staving off a three-set loss by jumping out to an 11-4 lead and racking up 12 kills on 29 attempts in the set. The Phoenix ultimately took the third set 25-19. In the fourth-set the Phoenix rallied back to tie the match at two after winning the set 25-23. Wilson managed 47 attempts during the set and struck for 16 kills.

In the fifth and final set things were close early. The Yellow Jackets went on a little run to put some distance between themselves and the Phoenix. Wilson showed life however and brought the score back within one, however the Yellow Jackets held off the comeback and won the set 16-14. 

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix had 52 kills for the match on 156 attempts, Aaron Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa., Commonwealth Connections Academy) led the team with 26 kills. Zachary McMaster (Gettysburg, Pa., New Oxford) added 15 kills as well.Ian Firestone (York, Pa., York Suburban) tallied 44 assists for the match while Evan Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa., Commonwealth Connections Academy) totaled 23 digs and Aaron Hoke added 12. 

Up Next: The Phoenix are back home again next Saturday when they host Immaculata University (0-8, 0-5 CVC) at 12:00 p.m.
