Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Phoenix Advance With Victory Over Gators

BALTIMORE, Md.- The sixth-seeded Wilson women's basketball team battled the third-seeded Notre Dame of Maryland Gators this evening in the first-round of the CSAC Playoffs. The Phoenix came away victorious against the Gators for the second time in a week, this time defeating them 47-37 in a close back-and-forth contest.

How It Happened: The Gators had a hot start, taking an early 7-2 lead over Wilson, but an Amber Watkins (Honesdale, Pa, Honesdale) jumper and a Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa., Annville-Cleona) three-pointer tied the score at 7. Points were hard to come by for the remainder of the first quarter, as both teams only mustered four points each in the last five and a half minutes. At the end of the period, the score sat tied at 11.

The game was tight to begin the second period of play, but the Gators took some late quarter momentum by taking a 23-14 lead with 2 minutes to go before the half. The Phoenix were quick to answer however and finished the half on a 6-0 run, trailing 23-20 at the break.

Both teams continued to battle to start the second half, trading buckets for the first half of the third. The Gators once again put a little distance between themselves and the Phoenix by taking a 30-24 lead, but once again Wilson would not go away. The Phoenix fought back with a 9-0 run to end the quarter and went into the final quarter leading 33-30.

The visiting Phoenix quickly stretched their lead to nine to start the fourth, after Kai Wyatt (Baltimore, Md.) and Michaela Singer drilled back-to-back three-pointers to allow the team to start to pull away. The Gators never recovered and with two minutes left Wilson held a comfortable 13-point lead and went on to win 47-37.  Wilson used a big second half to defeat the Gators, outscoring the hosts 27-14.

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix shot just 30% from the field and 18% from three, but were able to limit their opponent on the offensive end, forcing the Gators into 15 turnovers. Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fla., South Fort Myers) had a monster game, finishing with 12 points and 15 rebounds. Current CSAC Player of the Week, Kai Wyatt led the team with 13 points while Tori Cole added 8.

Up Next: Wilson will travel to top-seeded Rosemont College on Wednesday for the CSAC Semi-Final Round starting at 7:00 p.m. The game has a possibility of being pushed to Thursday due to weather so follow along online for updates.
