Wildcats Claw Past Phoenix


CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.- The Phoenix men's volleyball team was in action for the second time in as many days, facing the Wildcats of SUNY POLY in a NEAC match. The Wildcats (6-7, 2-1 NEAC) defeated the Phoenix (2-3, 1-2 NEAC) in straight sets by scores of 25-17, 25-12 and 25-20. 

How It Happened: The two teams began the match trading points before the visiting Wildcats rattled off four-straight points to take a 10-5 lead. Later in the set, the Wildcats held a 16-12 advantage before the Phoenix answered with two points to get back within striking distance. Poly took control of the first set when they took a 22-16 lead over the Phoenix and later won the set 25-17. The Phoenix had 11 kills in the first set on 29 attempts, with 6 of the kills coming from senior Aaron Hoke.

The second set saw the Phoenix take an early 8-5 lead, however the Wildcats scored the next 5 points and found themselves in front, 10-8. The Wildcats dominated the second set, scoring the next 15 of 19 points and winning 25-12. Wilson struck for 7 kills on 23 attempts during the set but finished with 9 errors.

In the final set, the Wildcats took control early, leading 7-2. The Phoenix responded nicely by scoring 8 of the next 11 points and tying the set at 10. Aaron Hoke had 2 aces and 3 kills during the Phoenix scoring stretch. Both teams preceded to battle back-and-forth and the score sat tied at 17. The Wildcats then scored four-straight points to take a 21-17 lead. Wilson was unable to get back within reach and the Wildcats took the set, 25-20. 

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix totaled 28 kills on 86 attempts while also tallying 3 aces and 26 digs. Aaron Hoke led both teams with 14 kills and was also responsible all three Phoenix aces. Ian Firestone registered 24 assists in the match while Evan Hoke had 9 digs. 

Up Next: Wilson will have a week off before hosting Randolph-Macon (6-6, 3-1 CVC) next Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
