Phoenix Lose Heartbreaker To Highlanders

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa- The Wilson College women's basketball team looked to wrap-up their regular season this afternoon as they faced off against their Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) foe, the Highlanders of Cairn University. The Phoenix (15-10, 9-7 CSAC) were defeated by the Highlanders (12-13, 9-7 CSAC) by a score of 69-62. Before the game, the women's basketball team honored their five seniors, Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va, Varina), Ashley Henderson (Upper Marlboro, Md., North Point), Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl, South Fort Myers), Amber Watkins (Honesdale, Pa, Honesdale), and Kai Wyatt (Baltimore, MD, Md Acad Tech & Hlth Sci), for all of their service and dedication to the Wilson women's basketball program. 

How It Happened: After Cairn scored their first bucket, Kai Wyatt  opened up the scoring for the Phoenix as she was albe to knockdown a three. Later on in the quarter, sophomore Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa., Annville-Cleona)  connected on a three off a freshman Tori Cole (Middleburg, FL, Orange Park) assist. Neither team was able to establish a solid lead and traded buckets for most of the first quarter. Cairn would hold the slight lead at the end of the first, 18-15.

In the second, Singer was able to get things started after she recorded a fast break layup. On the very next Wilson possession, she was able to sink a three that gave the Phoenix a 20-18 lead with just over eight minutes in the first half. These two buckets helped spark a 12-2 run for Wilson that put them ahead with 29-20. The Phoenix would close out the first half leading, 34-26.

Starting off the third quarter, the Highlanders started off on a 15-2 run that helped swing the lead in their favor, 41-36, with just under six and a half minutes remaining. On Wilson's next two possessions, Wyatt was able to add two more three's; she was also to sink another three before time expired in the quarter. The Phoenix would enter the final quarter trialing by two, 48-46.

Opening up the fourth, Wyatt added another three that gave Wilson a slight, one-point, lead with just under seven and a half minutes left. Cairn would respond with a four-point run that put them back in front, 53-49. The Highlanders would hold on their lead. The Phoenix would continue to battle but could not start another run. After Cairn would drain a flurry of free throws, they would go to win by a final score of 69-62.

Inside The Box Score: All of Wilson's players finished with points tonight, Wyatt would lead both teams with 27.  Lindsey Purvis would go on to chalk-up 13 points and grab 11 rebounds, Singer would add nine points during their performance this afternoon. The Phoenix would shoot 38% from the floor and a whopping 45% from three while their opponent would finish shooting 38% from the floor and 39% from three. 

Up Next: After a week of waiting, the Phoenix have punched their tickets to the CSAC playoffs! They will travel to take on the Gators of Notre Dame of Maryland University (13-12, 10-6 CSAC) on Monday, February 18, at 7:00.
