Phoenix Soar Over Eagles

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.- The Wilson College men's volleyball team was in action, this morning, as the faced off against the Eagles of the College of Saint Elizabeth in a North Eastern Athletic Conference (NEAC) game. After a closely fought match, the Phoenix (2-2, 1-1 NEAC) defeated the Eagles (2-6, 0-4 NEAC) three sets to one, with scores of: 30-28, 26-24 Eagles, 25-23, and 25-21. 

How It Happened: Wilson started out firing on all cylinders, in the first set they were able to chalk up 10 kills against seven errors on 32 attempts, resulting in a hitting percentage of 0.94. Senior Aaron Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa., Commonwealth Connections Academy) was able to rack up 2 aces in the set. After an intense rally from both teams, the Phoenix were able to take the set, 30-28. After trading rallies in the second set, Wilson was able to score 3 consecutive points that helped put them in front 17-16. After an Eagle timeout, the College of Saint Elizabeth was able to compose themselves and even things up at 23 a piece. They would go on to take the second set by a score of 26-24. In the third set, Wilson had 11 kills on 7 errors off of 27 attempts that gave them a hitting percentage of .148. The Phoenix were trailing 21-19 in the set when they took a well-timed timeout. Coming out of the break in play, they were able to rally and, eventually, take the set, 25-23. Coming into the final set, the Phoenix and Eagles continued to trade points back and forth. Neither ream was able to pull away until toward the end of the set. As Wilson began to pull away, they would take the set off of an ace from junior Ian Firestone (York, Pa., York Suburban). 

Inside the Box Score: Senior Zachary McMaster (Gettysburg, Pa., New Oxford) led the Phoenix with 16 kills. Senior Evan Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa., Commonwealth Connections Academy) was able to lead both teams with 22 digs on the night while Aaron Hoke and Zachary McMaster (Gettysburg, Pa., New Oxford) finished with 8 and 7, respectively. For the match, Wilson finished with 41 kills against 28 errors on 106 attempts for a hitting percentage of .123. 

Up Next: The Phoenix will be back in action tomorrow afternoon, February 17, as they get ready to face off against SUNY Poly (5-6 1-1 NEAC) in a NEAC matchup.
