Phoenix Falters to Eagles

MORRISTOWN, N.J. - The Wilson College women's basketball team traveled to take on the Eagles of the College of Saint Elizabeth in Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) action this afternoon. The Phoenix (1-6, 0-3 CSAC) were defeated by the Eagles (4-3, 1-0 CSAC) by a final score of 76-56.

How It Happened: Wilson started the game on a 9-0 run with baskets coming from junior Courtney Herbert (Accokeek, MD, Oxon Hill), freshman Madison Schaeffer (Yeagertown, PA, Mifflin County), and sophomore Tori Cole (Orange Park, FL, Orange Park). Saint Elizabeth would bounce back and end the quarter on a 20-3 run that brought the score to 20-12.

In the second quarter, the Phoenix started to chip away at the deficit. They were able to capitalize on free-throw opportunities as all of their points would come from the line in this quarter. They would enter halftime trailing, 30-21.

Opening up the third, Herbert was able to come up with a steal that led to a bucket from sophomore Brittany Washburn (Sandy Hook, VA, Salem Christian) that cut the Eagle lead to just seven. Later on in the quarter, senior Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va, Varina) knocked down a three and a fast-break layup that brought the score to 40-34, still in favor of Saint Elizabeth. The Phoenix would go into the final quarter still trailing, 38-55.

Early in the fourth, Cole was able to come up with a steal and connect on an and-one layup and foul shot. Wilson continued to score from the foul line but they would go on to be defeated by a final score of 76-56.

Inside the Box Score: Herbert led the Phoenix with 16 points, Cole finished with nine, and Schaeffer finished with eight. Cole, Herbert, and Day would go on to lead to Wilson in takeaways with five, three, and three steals, respectively. The Phoenix would finish shooting 29% from the floor and 84% from the line as their opponent finished shooting 39% from the floor and 80% from the foul line.
