CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College women's basketball team opened up Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play this evening as they played host to the Gators of Notre Dame of Maryland University. The Phoenix (1-4, 0-1 CSAC) were taken down by the Gators (4-3, 2-0 CSAC) by a final score of 72-62.
How It Happened: Wilson opened the game up on a 4-1 run with points coming from freshman
Samira Murphy (Virginia Beach, VA, Great Bridge Christian) and junior
Michaela Singer (Annville, PA, Annville-Cleona). Notre Dame responded right back as they started a 6-0 run that put them ahead, 7-4, with five and a half minutes left in the first half. The two opponents would spend the rest of the quarter trading points with each other as the Gators would finish the quarter in the lead, 18-15.
In the second, both teams continued to duke it out as there were eight lead changes in the quarter. Later on in the period, Wilson was able to take a one-point lead thanks to a deep three-pointer from
Singer. that put the Phoenix up 26-25. Wilson closed out the half on a 10-7 as they entered halftime leading, 35-33.
Murphy got things started in the third with a layup in the paint. The Phoenix continued to score as they jumped on a 7-2 run that extended their lead to 42-35. Wilson would enter the final quarter still leading by a score of 49-43.
In the fourth quarter, Notre Dame opened up the period on a 19-5 run that flipped the score in their favor, 62-54. Wilson couldn't find their rhythm in as the Gators turned up the defensive pressure and held to just 13 points. Wilson would go on to be defeated by a final score of 72-62.
Inside the Box Score: Wilson closed out the game shooting 30% from the floor while their opponents finished shooting 39%.
Singer led both teams with 20 points, sophomore
Courtney Herbert (Accokeek, MD, Oxon Hill) added 12, and
Murphy finished with eight. Sophomore
Tori Cole (Orange Park, FL, Orange Park) collected 11 points and 12 rebounds on her way to her first double-double of the season.
