Phoenix Outlast Royals

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.- In their final game of December, the Wilson men's basketball team defeated the Eastern Mennonite University Royals, 77-65. With the win, the Phoenix improve to 3-9 on the season while the Royals drop to 2-9 overall.

How It Happened: Eastern Mennonite scored the first five points of the game before the Phoenix stormed back on a 13-2 run, taking a 13-7 lead.

The Royals responded with a 9-3 run, as they were able to tie the game at 16. With just over eight minutes to play in the first half and the Phoenix trailing 23-22, Anthony Desruisseau (Burtonsville, Md., Springbrook HS) knocked down a three to put Wilson back in front. Desruisseau scored the next four points to cap off a personal 6-0 run and give the Phoenix a 29-23 lead.

The Phoenix were able to extend their lead to 11 with two minutes remaining after a Jeremiah Delaney (Manassas, Va., Osbourn) layup and would take a 10-point lead into the locker room. Wilson shot 56% from the field in the first half while shooting just 20% from beyond the arc.

Coming out of the break, Jeremiah Delaney drilled a three off a Zachary Powell (Manassas, Va., Osbourn) assist to give Wilson their largest lead of the game (13). After the Royals cut their deficit back to 9, the Phoenix used a 9-3 scoring run to take a 54-39 lead with 14 minutes to play. The scoring run was fueled by a trio of three-pointers from Rashaan Bean (San Antonio, Texas, Forest Park), Jeremiah Delaney and Zachary Powell.

Wilson maintained their double-digit lead, and with 8 minutes to play freshman Jeremiah Carter-Johnson (Richmond, Va., Mills E. Godwin) hit a three-pointer to push the Phoenix lead to 16.

Minutes later, Xavier Dowtin (Oxon Hill, Md., Oxon Hill HS), who provided great energy for the Phoenix off the bench, knocked down a three to give Wilson a commanding 19-point lead with 5 minutes to play. Wilson was able to hit some late free throws and hold on for the 77-65 victory.
