Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Blazers Rout Phoenix

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.- The Wilson Phoenix women's basketball team played host to the Blazers of Hood College this evening in a non-conference matchup. The Phoenix were plagued with a cold night of shooting as they fell to the Blazers, 79-53. With the loss, the Phoenix drop to 1-3 on the season.

How It Happened: Hood started the game hot, going on a 7-0 scoring run in the first few minutes of play. The Blazers later led 9-4 before the Phoenix went on a 7-0 run of their own to take an 11-9 lead. Hood responded with a strong finish to the first quarter, closing out the final three minutes with a 9-0 run to lead 18-11 after one.

After the Blazers extended their lead to 11 early in the second quarter, the Phoenix were able to cut their deficit back down to just 6 after Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa., Annville-Cleona) and Samira Murphy (Virginia Beach, Va., Great Bridge Christian) hit back-to-back threes for the Phoenix. Hood was able to push their advantage back to 11, but a last-second bucket by Murphy made the score 36-27 at the half in favor of the Blazers. Wilson shot just 23% from the field in the first half and 36% from beyond the arc in the first quarter.

A three from Samira Murphy to begin the second half brought the Phoenix back within six points, but the Blazers quickly went back up double-digits after a layup and a perfect trip to the foul line. By the four-minute mark in the period Hood had their largest lead of the game, holding a 51-32 advantage over the Phoenix. Wilson cut the deficit to 12 with a 7-0 run before a late three-pointer put the Blazers back up by 15 at the end of the quarter.

Hood put the Phoenix away early in the fourth quarter as they went on a 15-2 run to start the period and take a commanding 69-41 lead. Senior Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va., Varina) was able to end the drought as she knocked down a three, assisted by junior Michaela Singer, but the deficit was too much for the Phoenix as they went on to lose, 79-53.

Inside the Box Score: Wilson shot 27.5% from the field and 30% from three during the game. The Phoenix were also just 8-20 from the free-throw line. Jordyn Day led the Phoenix with 12 points while Samira Murphy added 11. Tori Cole (Orange Park, Fla., Orange Park) finished with 7 points and 9 rebounds while Michaela Singer had 7 points and 8 rebounds. Courtney Herbert (Accokeek, Md., Oxon Hill) led the Phoenix with 9 rebounds.

Up Next: Wilson will open up CSAC play this Sunday when they host Centenary University at 1:00 p.m.
