Last Second Shot Downs Phoenix

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.- The Wilson women's basketball team took on the visiting Mighty Macs of Immaculata University this evening in a non-conference matchup. Wilson was defeated on a last-second three-pointer by the Mighty Macs, giving them a  59-56 win. With the loss, the Phoenix drop to 1-2 on the early campaign while Immaculata moves to 4-2 overall.

How It Happened: Both teams struggled to score a bucket in the first three minutes of play, but Samira Murphy (Virginia Beach, Va., Great Bridge Christian) finally opened up the scoring for the Phoenix with a jumper inside the paint. After then falling behind 4-2, the Phoenix went on a 7-0 run to take a 9-4 lead. The Mighty Macs hit a three to cut their deficit to two, and a late Wilson free throw put them ahead 10-7 at the end of the first quarter.

Samira Murphy kicked off the second quarter with a three to give the Phoenix a six-point cushion, but the Mighty Macs used a quick 5-0 run to get back within one. Later in the period with Immaculata leading 21-19, Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va, Varina) nailed a three to put the Phoenix back in front. The Mighty Macs then went up 24-21but another basket from Day knotted things at 24. The Mighty Macs drilled a three-pointer of their own, but Jordyn Day continued her hot shooting by once again tying the game just before the half. Wilson shot 38% in the first half, including 55% from beyond the arc.

Wilson got off to a quick start in the second half, going on a 6-0 run to take an early six-point lead. The Macs got back within four, but two foul shots and a three by Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa, Annville-Cleona) bumped the Phoenix lead up to nine. After Immaculata hit four-straight free throws, Jordyn Day nailed another shot from beyond the arc to give Wilson an eight-point lead. The Phoenix were able to extend their advantage to ten just before the quarter as they led 45-35 heading to the final period.

Immaculata couldn't have drawn up a better start to the fourth quarter and trailing by 10. The Mighty Macs surged their way to a 15-0 scoring run to start the period, taking a 50-45 lead with six minutes remaining. Wilson didn't panic, however, and tied the game at 50 and later took a one-point lead. Immaculata regained a one-point lead, but Jordyn Day connected on another three to put the Phoenix ahead 54-52 with two minutes left. Both teams then traded buckets as the score sat tied at 56 with 30 seconds remaining in the contest. Michaela Singer was fouled on the offensive end for Wilson but unfortunately missed the free throw attempts to give the ball back to the Mighty Macs with 27 seconds left and no shot clock to worry about. Immaculata inbounded the ball and after taking the clock down to inside five seconds, Brielle Rigo hit a three from the corner to give her team a last-second lead. The Phoenix got the ball with 1.3 seconds left on the clock but were unable to get off a shot as they fell in heartbreaking fashion.
