GETTYSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College men's basketball team was in action this afternoon as they took on the Knights of Southern Virginia University in their second game of the Gettysburg Tip-Off Tournament. The Phoenix (1-3, 0-0 CSAC) defeated the Knights (0-5, 0-0 CAC) by a score of 77-64.
How It Happened: Both teams turned up the defense early as they would go scoreless until just under the seventeenth-minute mark of the first half. Sophomore
Anthony Desruisseau (Burtonsville, MD, Springbrook HS) would get the scoring started for the Phoenix as he connected on a three-pointer that sparked a 10-0 run, putting Wilson ahead 10-5. The Phoenix would work the ball in the paint throughout the half as junior
Zachary Powell (Manassas, VA, Osbourn) tallied up a pair of baskets down low. Southern Virginia cut the lead to just two with about nine minutes left in the half as neither team was able to gather a solid lead. The Phoenix would enter halftime up by one thanks to a pair of three throws coming from junior
Christian Evans (Baltimore, MD, Our Lady Of Mount Carmel), 19-18.
In the second half, both teams battled back and forth with Wilson pulling ahead by six until the Knights came back and cut the lead back to just three with fourteen minutes left. Shortly after, the Phoenix pulled back out in front thanks to a pair of three's coming from sophomore
Adrian Thomas (Germantown, MD, Northwest HS) and
Powell that put them ahead by nine. More threes would come later as senior
Rashaan Bean (San Antonio, Tx, Forest Park) was able to knock one down that put The Phoenix up by 15. Wilson got the offense going in this half as they would never look back and go on the win by a final score of 77-64.
Inside the Box Score: The men's basketball team finished shooting 44% from the floor today as the Knights shot 40%. The Phoenix dominated down low all game as they outscored their opponent 44-10 inside the paint; they also dominated the glass as they rebounded their opponent 45-29.
Thomas was the leading scorer for Wilson as he finished with 24 points and nine rebounds on his way to being named to the All-Tournament team.
Evans,
Bean, and
Desruisseau also finish in double figures as they finished with 14, 13, and 11 points, respectively.
