Women's Volleyball Tops Cairn, 3-1

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College women's volleyball team squared off against the Highlanders of Cairn University tonight in a Colonial States Athletic Conference match. The Phoenix (10-7, 3-1 CSAC) took down the Highlanders (3-16, 2-3 CSAC) by a final score of three sets to one. 

How It Happened: Wilson got to work quickly in the first set as they jumped out to a 15-4 lead. They would close out the first set by a score of 25-11. In the second set, the Phoenix started on another run. This time they jumped out to a 6-1 lead. Cairn would start to close the gap as they pushed the score to 13-6 but Wilson recovered and started on another run, pushing the score to 20-9. The Highlanders continued to linger as they cut the gap back down to 23-16, but the Phoenix would wrap up the set at 25-17.

In the third set, Cairn would start a 9-2 run before Wilson was able to rally back and take the lead at 11-10. Both teams rallied back and forth until things were knotted up at 23 apiece. The Highlanders would take the third, 25-23. Heading into the fourth and final set, the Phoenix came out swinging as they extended their lead to 10-2 early on. Aces would play a critical factor as Wilson was able to tally five aces in this set alone. The Phoenix would go on to close out the Cairn by a final score of three sets to one. 

Inside the Box Score: Wilson finished with 41 kills on 99 attempts against 20 errors for a hitting percentage of .212 while their opponents finished with 27 kills on 94 attempts against 20 errors for a hitting percentage of .074. Sophomore Tioleaoauli Posiulai (Waipahu, HI., University Laboratory School) and freshman Anika Eigen-Zucchi (Washington, D.C., St. Johns College High School) led the Phoenix with 19 and 14 kills, respectively, while junior Lizzy Farnes (Coconut Creek, Fla., Coral Springs) finished with five. Freshman Elizabeth Vuxta (Elizabethtown, PA., Elizabethtown) a career-high seven aces in the match while freshman Jenna Mongold (Mercersburg, PA., James Buchanan) dished out 37 assists. Junior Sierra Hill (Hagerstown, Md., South Hagerstown) racked up 11 digs while sophomore Madison Coy (Indiana, PA., Penns Manor) tallied five. 

Up Next: The women's volleyball team will be back in action on Friday, October 11, where they will close out nonconference play against the Gophers of Goucher College (9-9, 0-3) at home starting at 6:00 P.M.
