Phoenix Swept in Nonconference Finale

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.- The Wilson women's volleyball played host to the Gophers of Goucher College this evening in their final nonconference match of the season. The Phoenix (10-8, 3-1 CSAC), who were winners of their last two, fell to the Gophers (10-9, 0-3 Landmark) three sets to none with scores of 25-16, 25-20 and 25-18 all in favor of Goucher.

How It Happened: Goucher got off to a hot start in the first set, jumping out to a 14-4 lead over the Phoenix. Wilson responded nicely by scoring six straight points to get back within four of the Gophers.

Later the Gophers led 17-13 before 4 consecutive points gave them an 8 point advantage. The Gophers went on to close out the set with three kills to win 25-16 and take a 1-0 match lead. The Phoenix had 9 kills on 25 attempts in the first set with the kills being split between Elizabeth Vuxta (Elizabethtown, Pa., Elizabethtown), Anika Eigen-Zucchi (Washington, D.C., St. Johns College High School) andTioleaoauli Posiulai (Waipahu, Hawaii, University Laboratory School)

The second set started much differently than the first, as both teams traded points until the score sat tied at 10. Goucher put some distance between themselves and the Phoenix with five unanswered points, taking a 15-10 lead.

Wilson later brought the score to 16-13, but the Gophers went on another scoring run to move ahead 21-13. With Goucher needing one point to close out the second set, the Phoenix rallied for three points to gain some momentum late in the set. Goucher put a stop to that momentum, ending the second set with a kill to win 25-20. Wilson finished the second set with eight kills on 26 attempts as Anika Eigen-Zucchi led the way with 4 kills.

Once again the Gophers got off to a hot start in the third set, holding an early 10-2 advantage. As they did in the first set, the Phoenix answered by scoring the next 11 of 15 points in the match to bring the score to 14-13.

After trading a few points, Goucher closed out the third set by scoring 8 of 11 points to win the set 25-18 and take the match, 3-0. In the final set, the Phoenix registered just four kills on 17 attempts and had 7 errors.

Inside the Box Score: Wilson finished off the match with 21 total kills, 5 services aces, and 36 digs. Anika Eigen-Zucchi led the Phoenix with 8 kills, 3 aces, and 11 digs. Jenna Mongold (Mercersburg, Pa., James Buchanan) served up 16 assists while Madison Coy (Indiana, Pa., Penns Manor) had 10 digs.

Up Next: The Phoenix return to action tomorrow as they get back into CSAC action at Centenary University with the match set to start at 12:00 p.m.
