Two Hat Tricks Help Propel Phoenix Over Lions

BRYN ATHYN, Pa. - The Wilson College field hockey team traveled to take on the Lions of Bryn Athyn College this afternoon in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) play. The Phoenix (5-7, 1-1 CSAC) took down the Lions (1-7, 0-2) by a score of 8-0. The Phoenix were led by juniors Morgan Burkepile (Millerstown, PA., Greenwood) and Michaela Singer (Annville, PA., Annville-Cleona) who both scored a hat trick in the match.

How It Happened: Wilson got things started with a penalty corner but could not fire a shot off. The Phoenix continued to look for scoring opportunities until sophomore Breeann Sheaffer (Middleburg, PA., Midd-West) snuck one past the keeper, giving Wilson the 1-0 lead. One minute later, the Phoenix extended their lead to 2-0 as Singer was able to score her first goal of the night off an assist from freshman Kylie Greek (Harrington, Del., Lake Forest)

In the second period of play, the Wilson scoring continued as Singer scored again. This time she fired back a rebound from junior Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, PA., Greencastle-Antrim), pushing the score to 3-0. Burkepile would follow that up with a goal of her own, she was assisted by freshman Alexis Pflumm (Camden, Del. , Caesar Rodney). Later on in the period, the Phoenix would score again as freshman Madison Cowan (Silver Spring, MD., Albert Einstein)  pushed the ball across the right-wing giving Burkepile a wide-open net as Wilson entered halftime with a  5-0 advantage.

In the second half, the Blue and White picked up right where they left off. Freshman Alexis Alleman (Shippensburg, PA., Shippensburg) received a pass down low from Pflumm and beat the keeper, as Wilson expanded their lead to 6-0. Shortly after, Singer would tip a pass, from junior Allison Reber (Narvon, PA., Garden Spot), for her third goal of the night. Burkepile would also score her third goal in this quarter as Cowan recorded her second assist of the night. The Phoenix would close out the Lions by a final score of 8-0.

Inside the Box Score: Wilson outshot their opponents 35-0 with 21 of those shots on goal. They were able to rack up 12 penalty corners while holding the Lions to none. Singer and Burkepile combined for 15 of Wilson's shots as they each scored a hat trick, Sheaffer and Alleman also scored one goal each. Cowan and Pflumm each had two assists while Carty, Greek, and Reber each had one.

Up Next: The field hockey team will take on the Chargers of Lancaster Bible College (3-8, 1-1 CSAC) on Saturday, October 19, at 11:00 a.m.
