Phoenix Corral Chargers

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.- The Wilson College field hockey team took on the visiting Chargers of Lancaster Bible College this morning in front of a large homecoming crowd. The Phoenix (6-7, 2-1 CSAC) won in dominating fashion, defeating the Chargers (3-12, 1-3 CSAC) 5-1 to earn a conference victory.

How It Happened: Midway through the first-period freshman Abigail Rosenberry (Shippensburg, Pa., Shippensburg) entered the circled before spinning around and sending a pass over to fellow freshman, Alexis Pflumm (Camden, Del. , Caesar Rodney). Pflumm then took the pass and sent a laser into the cage to give Wilson a 1-0 lead.

Less than three minutes later the Phoenix struck again, as a blocked shot from outside the circle was picked up and fired into the cage by Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa, Annville-Cleona), putting the Phoenix ahead 2-0 early.

Early in the second quarter, the Chargers cut down their deficit to one with a goal coming from Macy Balmer who took a rebounded shot from the right side of the circle. Wilson quickly regained their two-goal lead with Autumn Irwin (Garland, Maine, Dexter Regional) finding the stick of Michaela Singer for her second goal of the game. The Phoenix went into halftime leading 3-1, taking 7 shots in the first half while being awarded 5 penalty corners.

After eight scoreless minutes to start the second half, Allison Reber (Narvon, Pa., Garden Spot) blasted a shot off of a penalty corner toward the net that was deflected by Michaela Singer and then again deflected by Alexis Alleman (Shippensburg, Pa., Shippensburg). Alleman's deflection found its way into the top left portion of the cage to put Wilson ahead 4-1.

Moments later the Phoenix put up their fifth and final tally on the scoreboard as Morgan Burkepile (Millerstown, Pa., Greenwood) poked a rebounded shot past the goaltender, giving Wilson the commanding 5-1 advantage.

Inside the Box Score: Total shots were 18-4 in favor of the Phoenix, who also led in shots on goal, 10-2. Wilson also held the advantage in penalty corners, 14-0. Morgan Burkepile and Alexis Pflumm led the Phoenix in shots with 5 apiece, the two also collected goals in the game. Michaela Singer led both teams with two goals while also picking up an assist. The two goals give Singer a team-leading 8 for the season. Alexis Alleman recorded a goal in the game as well, giving her three for the season.

Up Next: The Phoenix will host Notre Dame of Maryland (6-6, 2-0 CSAC) in another important CSAC match up this Wednesday at 4:00 p.m.
