Phoenix Take Down Lions


BRYN ATHYN, Pa.- The Wilson women's volleyball team hit the road this afternoon for a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) match with the Lions of Bryn Athyn College.

Wilson won the match 3-1 with set scores of 25-8 Bryn Athyn, 25-21 Wilson, 25-15 Wilson, and 25-22 Wilson. With the win, the Phoenix improve to 9-7 overall and are now 2-1 in conference play. 

How It Happened: Bryn Athyn got off to a hot start in the first set, jumping out to an 8-0 lead early on. The Lions were able to push their lead to 14-2 and would ultimately take the first set 25-8. The Phoenix had just four kills in the set and totaled eight errors. 

The Phoenix responded nicely in the second set, taking an early 10-3 lead. The Lions got within four later on but Wilson answered and extended the lead back up to seven. Bryn Athyn had a late push to get back within three but the Phoenix closed out the set with a kill from Madison Coy (Indiana, Pa., Penns Manor) to win 25-21. Wilson had 14 kills in the set on 33 attempts with 6 kills coming from Tioleaoauli Posiulai (Waipahu, Hawaii., University Laboratory School)

Bryn Athyn held a 10-7 lead partway through the third but the Phoenix proceeded to outscore the Lions 15-8, including scoring 9 straight points to win the set, 25-15. Anika Eigen-Zucchi (Washington, D.C., St. Johns College High School) and Tioleaoauli Posiulai combined for 10 of the 12 Wilson kills in the set. 

The fourth set was a back-and-forth battle between the two CSAC opponents and with the score tied at 19 late in the set, each team was looking to gain an edge. Wilson would gain that edge by scoring four straight points to get within two points of winning the match. Kills by Eigen-Zucchi and Posiulai gave the Phoenix a 25-22 set victory and clinched a CSAC match win. 

Inside the Box Score: Wilson racked up 46 kills for the match on 147 attempts. The Phoenix also finished with 88 digs and 6 service aces. Tioleaoauli Posiulai led the Phoenix with 20 kills while Anika Eigen-Zucchi had 15. Both also led the team in digs with 16 for Posiulai and 15 for Eigen-Zucchi. Jenna Mongold (Mercersburg, Pa., James Buchanan)dished out 32 assists in the match. 

Up Next: Wilson will host Cairn University this Wednesday in conference action at 7:00 p.m.
