Giants Nip Phoenix in Overtime

LA PLUME, Pa. -  In a rematch of last year's Colonial States Athletic Conference championship game, Wilson College visited Keystone College this afternoon. The Giants (4-6, 1-0 CSAC) topped the Phoenix (4-7, 0-1 CSAC) by a final score of 2-1 in overtime.

How It Happened: The Phoenix struck early in the first quarter when sophomore Breeann Sheaffer (Middleburg, PA., Midd-West) for freshman Alexis Pflumm (Camden, Del. , Caesar Rodney) off the penalty corner for a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute. Later in the period sophomore Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, PA., Greencastle-Antrim) fired a shot off a penalty corner but it was blocked. The defense was strong for the Phoenix as they didn't allow a shot on goal in the quarter. The opening ten minutes of the second quarter was controlled by the Giants, but five penalty corners and three shots came up empty. Just before halftime, the Phoenix had another attempts off a penalty corner as junior Michaela Singer (Annville, PA., Annville-Cleona) put a shot on target but the Giants keeper came up with the save as the Phoenix took a 1-0 lead into the break. In the third quarter, the Giants controlled most of the offensive action, but again the Phoenix defense held and kept the hosts from getting on the scoreboard. Pressure from the Giants offense continued to open the fourth quarter and after a pair of saves by junior Krista Nayadley (Hampton, VA, Hampton), the Giants finally broke through to tie the game at 1-1 with just over ten minutes to play in regulation. Late in the period the Phoenix got a shot from Carty but it was blocked and the teams headed to overtime in a 1-1 tie. In the extra session, the Giants put two shots on goal early, but Nayadley denied both attempts. Singer gave the Phoenix their only attempt on the goal in the overtime period but the Giants keeper came up with the save. A few minutes later, after Nayadley recorded two more saves, the Giants hot the game winner to claim the 2-1 overtime victory.

Inside the Box Score: Pflumm's goal was the first of her collegiate career. Singer led the team with 2 shots on goal and Nayadley recorded 8 saves.

Up Next: Wilson will head to Bryn Athyn on Monday for a CSAC match-up with the Lions at 4:00 p.m.
