ALLENTOWN, Pa. - The Wilson College women's volleyball team traveled to take on the Falcons of Cedar Crest College this evening in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) match. The Phoenix (12-10, 5-3 CSAC) were defeated by the Falcons (13-8, 7-0 CSAC) in an exciting match by a score of three sets to one. Wilson took the first set, 25-20, but dropped the next three by a score of 25-21, 25-21, and 32-30.
How It Happened: Both teams rallied back and forth before the Phoenix were able to take an 8-6 lead. After that, Wilson wouldn't look back as they lead the rest of the set and extended their lead to as many as five points before taking the first set by a score of 25-20.
In the second set, Cedar Crest started on a 6-1 run and were able to extend their lead to 17-8. That's when the Phoenix would come alive and start to chip away at the Falcon lead. Wilson started a 13-5 run and was able to pull within one point, bringing the score to 22-21. But, Cedar Crest would steal the second set, 25-21.
In the third, the Falcons started the set on a 7-3 run. But the Phoenix would not be denied as they methodically chipped away at the lead and eventually knot things up at 16 apiece before taking the 17-16 lead. Both teams would duke it out before Cedar Crest was able to pull away and take the set by a score of 25-21.
Moving to the final set, Wilson opened things up with a 5-2 run and extended their lead to 14-7. The Falcons responded with six straight points and was able to cut the lead to just one point. The two opponents dueled back and forth as neither team was able to pull ahead, but eventually Cedar Crest would finish out the set 32-30, giving them the three sets to one victory.
Inside the Box Score: Wilson finished with 46 kills on 155 attempts against 20 errors for a hitting percentage of .168 while their opponent finished with 58 kills on 157 attempts against 24 errors for a hitting percentage of .217. Sophomore
Tioleaoauli Posiulai (Waipahu, HI, University Laboratory School) led both teams with 18 kills, freshman
Anika Eigen-Zucchi (Washington, D.C., St. Johns College High School) had 16, and senior
Lizzy Farnes (Coconut Creek, Fla., Coral Springs) finished with eight. freshman
Jenna Mongold (Mercersburg, PA., James Buchanan) finished with 35 assists. The Phoenix finished with 12 aces as five different players tallied at least two aces in the match.
Up Next: The women's volleyball team will close out regular season play as they get set to take on the College of Saint Elizabeth on Saturday, October 26, at noon.
