Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Phoenix Top Gators, 4-1

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.- Michaela Singer's (Annville, PA, Annville-Cleona) second hat-trick of the season helped the Wilson field hockey team to a 4-1 victory over CSAC foe, Notre Dame of Maryland University. With the win, the Phoenix improve to 7-7 overall and are now 3-1 in conference play.

How It Happened: After a scoreless first 10 minutes of play, freshman Alexis Pflumm (Camden, Del. , Caesar Rodney) blasted a shot toward the cage that found the stick of Michaela Singer and was deflected in for the first Phoenix goal. Wilson ended the first period with their 1-0 lead intact, taking 3 shots in the period.

The Phoenix found themselves with several scoring chances early in the second period, but the Gators' goalie was able to make four consecutive saves to prevent Wilson from extending their lead.

With two minutes remaining in the half, Michaela Singer took a shot that was kicked aside by the Gators' goalie. Singer was able to get her stick on the rebound and send the ball into the cage to put Wilson ahead 2-0. The Phoenix registered 7 shots in the second period, with Morgan Burkepile (Millerstown, Pa., Greenwood) and Singer combining for 5 of the 7.

Two minutes into the third period, Michaela Singer carried the ball into the right corner of the circle and sent a crossing pass toward the middle of the circle. The pass was corralled by Morgan Burkepile, who fired a shot past the goalie to give Wilson the 3-0 lead. Burkepile led the Phoenix in shots for the period with 4 while Singer added two.

Notre Dame cut into the Phoenix lead midway through the fourth quarter but the Phoenix answered, as Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, Pa., Greencastle-Antrim) took a shot from the top of the circle that deflected off the stick of Michaela Singer for her third goal of the game. The 4-1 Wilson lead would stand as the clock hit zero and the Phoenix captured an important CSAC victory.

Inside the Box Score: Shots were 23-6 in favor of Wilson, who also dominated shots on goal, 16-5. The Phoenix also led both teams in penalty corners, 8-3. Michaela Singer and Morgan Burkepile had nine shots apiece with Singer collecting a hat-trick and an assist and Burkepile finishing with a goal. Phoenix goaltender Krista Nayadley (Hampton, VA, Hampton) ended the game with 4 saves.

Up Next: The Phoenix will have a week off before traveling to Cedar Crest College next Wednesday for another CSAC game beginning at 7:00 p.m.
