Women's Volleyball Falls to Defenders

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College women's volleyball team was in action this afternoon as they squared off against the Defenders of Clarks Summit University in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) match. The Phoenix (12-9, 5-2 CSAC) were defeated by the Defenders (7-18, 2-4 CSAC) by a score of three sets to none with scores of 25-20, 25-22, and 25-17. Tonight was also senior night for the volleyball team as they honored their lone senior, Lizzy Farnes (Coconut Creek, Fla., Coral Springs).

How It Happened: Wilson jumped out to a 5-2 lead, early in the first set. Clarks Summit started to storm back and flipped the score to 6-6. The Defenders continued to rally as they extended their lead to 15-9. The Phoenix would not go away easily as they battled back and were able to knot up the score at 19 apiece. Wilson could not hold on as they would lose the first set, 25-20.

In the second set, the blue and white stormed out to a 13-6 lead and eventually extended their lead to 15-10. Clarks Summit would start to rally back and eventually evened the match up at 16 all. The Phoenix fought but could not hold on as they fell in the second set by a score of 25-22.

In the final set, the Defenders were the ones who started an early run as they were able to push the score to 15-4 early on. The Phoenix would go on an 11-4 run as they were able to pull within four points. Wilson would drop the final set by a score of 25-17.

Inside the Box Score: The women's volleyball team finished with 27 kills on 78 attempts against 14 errors for a hitting percentage of .167 while their opponents had 44 kills on 100 attempts against 16 errors for a hitting percentage of .280. Sophomore Tioleaoauli Posiulai (Waipahu, HI, University Laboratory School) led the Phoenix with 11 kills while freshman Anika Eigen-Zucchi (Washington, D.C., St. Johns College High School) had 8 and Farnes finished with four. Freshman Jenna Mongold (Mercersburg, PA., James Buchanan) supplied the assists all match as she finished with 24. 

Up Next: Wilson will take on the Falcons of Cedar Crest College in another CSAC match on Wednesday, October 23, at 7:00 p.m.
