Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Women's Hoops Fall Despite Valiant Effort

CHAMBERSURG, Pa.- After a long winter break, the Wilson College women's basketball team returned to action this afternoon where they squared off against the Cyclones of Centenary University in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) game. The Phoenix (5-5, 1-3 CSAC) were defeated by the Cyclones (2-8, 2-1 CSAC) by a score of 57-49.

How It Happened: Centenary would jump out to an early 6-2 lead in the first quarter. Wilson would start to chip away at the lead after senior Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl, South Fort Myers) and freshman L'Shana Cobey (Silver Spring, Md., Montgomery Blair) were able to find the bottom of the net. The Phoenix would trail at the end of the first quarter, 14-10. Wilson would open the second quarter with a bucket that brought them within two points of Centenary. The Cyclones, however, would spend the next five minutes on an eleven point run that would extend their lead to 25-12. The Phoenix would go into halftime trailing, 29-19.

Senior Amber Watkins (Honesdale, Pa, Honesdale) would get things going with a huge three-pointer to start the second half that would bring Wilson within seven points; Centenary would respond with buckets of their own. As the third quarter continued, sophomore Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa., Annville-Cleona) was able to connect with a three of her own that would cut the lead back to seven. With just under three minutes left in the third, L'Shana Cobey was assessed her fifth foul of the game. Due to injuries that have plagued the Phoenix in the beginning of the season, Wilson would have to continue the rest of the game down a player. Despite this, the two teams would  continue to trade buckets for the rest of the quarter. Watkins was able to connect with another three with time winding down that would bring the Phoenix within five points; the Cyclones, however, would respond with a three of their own right before the buzzer. This would bring the score to 40-32 entering the final quarter of play. Wilson would not be denied and continued to battle despite only playing with four players. Watkins continued to knock down threes and brought the Phoenix to within five points. Centenary would close out the game though and come through with the victory, with the final score being 57-49.

Inside The Box Score: Wilson did not give up in this one, the team fought tooth and nail throughout the whole game. The Phoenix had 3 players finish in double figures this afternoon as Lindsey PurvisAmber Watkinsand Michaela Singer finished with 16, 14, and 13 points, respectively. Freshman Tori Cole (Middleburg, Fl, Orange Park) had a great night on the boards as she would go on to finish with a career high 12 rebounds. Wilson finished the night shooting 35% from the floor while Centenary would finish shooting 42%.
