Women's Basketball Slips To Cyclones On The Road

HACKETTSTOWN, N.J.- The Wilson College women's basketball team hit the road this evening where they squared off against the Cyclones of Centenary University in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) showdown. The Phoenix (10-7, 5-5 CSAC) were taken down by the Cyclones (6-11, 5-4 CSAC) by a score of 62-49.

HOW IT HAPPENED: Both teams got things started on the defensive side of the ball as neither team was able to find the hoop until just over two minutes into the game. That's when sophomore Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa., Annville-Cleona) knocked down a three-pointer to get things going for Wilson. The opponents would duke it out for the remaining quarter. Seniors Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fla., South Fort Myers) and Kai Wyatt (Baltimore, Md., Md Acad Tech & Hlth Sci) both started to find their rhythm and were able to add points for the Phoenix. Wilson would round out the first quarter trailing by six, 16-10.

In the second quarter of play, Singer opened things up again followed by a shot from beyond the arc from Wyatt that cut the deficit to just one point. The Phoenix immediately capitalized off a Cyclone turnover and Wyatt knocked down another three that put the Blue and White ahead by two with just under six and a half minutes remaining in the half. After trading buckets, Centenary was able to start on a 5-0 run that helped swing momentum in their favor and put them ahead by three with 3 minutes to go in the quarter. Wilson would enter the half trailing, 26-23.

The Cyclones started the third quarter out off on another 5-0 run, helping to extend their lead to eight. The Phoenix would answer right back, Purvis would drive to the lane hit a layup while Wyatt added another three. Although Wilson had several runs in this quarter, they just could not stop Centenary long enough to get back into the lead. They would enter the final quarter of play trailing, 45-38.

In the fourth, the Cyclones pushed their lead further. While the Wilson defense was able to force up several missed shots, their offense just could not seem to click and struggled to find points in the final quarter. Freshman Tori Cole (Middleburg, Fla., Orange Park) was able to connect on a pair of layups, Singer and Wyatt also added a layup each. The Phoenix could not mount the comeback tonight, as they would go on to lose 62-49.

Inside The Box Score: Wyatt was the high scorer on the night as she finished with 16 points. Purvis capped off her night with 12 points, five rebounds, and four assists, while Singer was able to add nine points. Cole finished the night with eight points and four assists while going on to grab 11 rebounds. Wilson finished the night shooting 37% from the floor while their opponent finished shooting 38%. The big difference came from the foul line, Wilson finished shooting 4-10 from the line while the Cyclones finished going 19-21.

Up Next: Coming up the Phoenix will play host to the visiting Defenders of Clarks Summit University ( 0-18, 0-10 CSAC) this Saturday, January 26, at 1:00 p.m.
