Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

Fourth Quarter Rally Leads to Phoenix Victory

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.- The Wilson women's basketball team earned an impressive win over the visiting Lions of Bryn Athyn College this evening in a Colonial States Athletic Conference (CSAC) matchup. The Phoenix (9-6, 4-4 CSAC) had a fourth quarter comeback and defeated the Lions (1-15, 1-7 CSAC) by a final score of 65-58.

How It Happened: Wilson started off on a quick 5-0 run; senior Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fla., South Fort Myers) hit a layup down low while senior Kai Wyatt (Baltimore, MD, Md Acad Tech & Hlth Sci) connected on a thee-pointer off a Purvis assist. Bryn Athyn responded right back by going on a 10-0 run that ended with less than a minute in the first quarter. The Phoenix would make quick work with the time left and even things up at the end of the quarter, 10-10.

In the second quarter, the two teams started off by trading baskets with one another before the Lions would go on another run, bringing the score to 20-14. Sophomore Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa., Annville-Cleona) helped pace the Phoenix as she was able to connect on a deep three-pointer and a layup while Wyatt hit several jumpers. Wilson would enter the half trailing, 30-25.

The Phoenix got things going in the third as they would go on a 7-0 run that put them ahead, 32-30, with nine minutes remaining in the quarter. Bryn Athyn would respond, yes again, with their own 7-0 run that put them back ahead by two. The two opponents would continue battling with neither one being able to hold a lead. Wyatt was able to connect with two three-pointers and freshman Tori Cole (Middleburg, Fla., Orange Park) added two jumpers in the quarter for the Phoenix.

Entering the final quarter of play, both teams were tied up at 48 a piece. Neither team could establish and hold on to a lead in this one, as there were 6 lead changes in this quarter alone. With time winding down, Cole connected with a jumper in the paint that would give Wilson a one-point lead with 2:23 remaining. After a huge defensive stop for the Phoenix, Singer hit a three that gave Wilson a four-point lead; these two shots proved to be daggers for the Lions. The Phoenix would go on to victory, 65-58.

Inside the Box Score: Wyatt lead both teams with 21 points, Singer hit four three-pointers that helped guide her to a 16-point performance, and senior Amber Watkins (Honesdale, Pa, Honesdale) finished the night with eight assists and seven rebounds. Cole would round out her night with a double-double, she had 13 points and 10 rebounds. Purvis also finished with a double-double adding 11 points 10 rebounds, keeping her streak of  five straight double-doubles alive. Wilson wrapped up the night shooting 43% from the floor.

Up Next: The Phoenix will take on the Giants of Keystone College (9-7,6-2 CSAC) on January 22 at 6:00 p.m. here in the friendly confides of Gannett Memorial Field House.
