Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Quakers Edge Phoenix

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa.- Wilson College field hockey hosted Earlham College in their opening match of the 2018 Wilson College Invitational. The Quakers (2-2) were able to score the go-ahead goal with just over ten minutes remaining to edge the Phoenix (1-1) by a final score of 2-1.

How It Happened: The Phoenix controlled the match in the early going, forcing 3 early penalty corner attempts but shots by senior Lauren Moss (Bloomsburg, Pa., Central Columbia) and sophomore Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa., Annville-Cleona) couldn't find the cage. Midway through the half, the Quakers dominated possession and fired off seven shots, however sophomore goalkeeper Brooke McLachlan (High Range, New South Wales, Chevalier) stopped all three of the shots that were on goal. Both teams had scoring opportunities in the half, but neither could cash in and headed to the half in a scoreless tie. The second half got underway with the Phoenix quickly taking aim at the Quakers keeper, but again Singer and Moss couldn't break through. The Quakers got on the board first as Isabelle Bishop took a pass from Leah Pinto and scored for the 1-0 lead at the forty-second minute. Less than a minute later the Phoenix offense was putting pressure on the Quaker keeper as sophomore Allison Reber (Narvon, Pa., Garden Spot), senior Payton Dziemburski (Rising Sun, Md., Rising Sun) and sophomore Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, Pa., Greencastle-Antrim) all fired shots at the goal. Finally, Singer was able to rattle the cage as she gathered the ball right in front  and put it in the right side to tie the game at 1-1 with fifteen minutes to go. After a Quaker timeout, the visitors were able to keep the action on the offensive side for the next several minutes, eventually breaking the tie when Sofia Salvatore found the left side of the cage for a 2-1 lead. Late in the match, Moss and Singer took aim at the goal but both attempts sailed wide and the Quakers held on for the 2-1 victory.

Inside the Box Score: Both teams took 16 shots and each team had 9 shots on goal. The Phoenix held a 12-9 edge in penalty corners. McLachlan recorded 6 saves for the match while sophomore Bethany Comp (Millerstown, PA. , Greenwood) added a defensive save. Singer paced both teams with 6 shots on goal.

Up Next: The Phoenix will take on Sweet Briar College tomorrow morning at 10:00 a.m. in the consolation game of the Wilson College Invitational.
