Game Recap: Field Hockey |

Phoenix Blanked on the Road

SELINSGROVE, Pa. - After several postponements and cancellations due to weather, the Wilson College field hockey team was back on the field for competition for the first time in twelve days. The Phoenix (1-2) went on the road to battle a talented Susquehanna University squad and fell to the River Hawks (3-4) by a score of 5-0.

How It Happened: The Phoenix offense tried to shake off the rust quickly as junior Katie Shank (Waynesboro, Pa., Waynesboro) fired a shot on goal less than a minute into the match, but the attempt was denied by the River Hawks keeper. A few minutes later, the hosts got on the scoreboard first as Hunter Pitman scored just before the five minute mark for a 1-0 lead. For the next fifteen minutes, the River Hawks dominated possession but Phoenix sophomore goalkeeper Brooke McLachlan (High Range, New South Wales, Chevalier) stopped six straight shots before finally allowing a goal by Maddie Taylor that put he hosts up 2-0. The Phoenix defense continued to battle and McLachlan would record three more saves before the break and sophomore Bethany Comp (Millerstown, PA. , Greenwood) would add a defensive save to keep the visitors within striking distance. Just before halftime, the Phoenix had a couple of scoring opportunities as freshman Breeann Sheaffer (Middleburg, PA. , Midd-West) and sophomore Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa., Annville-Cleona) each took aim at the cage, but neither shot got past the River Hawks keeper and the Phoenix trailed 2-0 at the half. Senior Lauren Moss (Bloomsburg, Pa., Central Columbia) looked to get the Phoenix offense on the board early in the second half but her shot attempt was stopped. The River Hawks would add another goal a few minutes later to push the lead to 3-0. Though the Phoenix continued to battle, the host River Hawks were too strong down the stretch and tacked on a couple of late goals to push the final margin to 5-0.

Inside the Box Score: For the match, the River Hawks held a 35-9 advantage in shots and a 24-7 edge in shots on goal. The hosts also held a 15-8 advantage in penalty corners, while the Phoenix recorded 19 saves to the River Hawks 7. Sheaffer and Singer led the Phoenix with two shots each.

Up Next: Wilson will open Colonial States Athletic Conference play at home on Saturday versus Keystone College at 1:00 p.m.
