Game Recap: Men's Soccer |

Phoenix Smite Ravens

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College men's soccer team hosted Rosemont College in their Colonial States Athletic Conference opener this afternoon. The Phoenix (2-4-2, 1-0 CSAC) topped the Ravens (3-7, 1-1 CSAC) by a final score of 1-0.

How It Happened: A solid defensive effort led by senior Kevin Lysaght (Toms River, NJ., Toms River North) and  sophomore Tyler Rothka (Washington, Pa., Cannon-McMillian) and a great effort in goal by junior Dan Perry (London, England, Okanagan Secondary) caused headaches for the Ravens offense all afternoon, while the Phoenix offense put pressure on the defense all day long. Midway through the half, sophomore René Quintanilla (San Salvador, El Salvador, Chambersburg) took a header off a corner kick from senior Jesse Smith that hit off the left post and a few minutes later Quintanilla took another header that was just high, but the Phoenix offense kept attacking. With ten minutes to go before the break, senior Ethan Russ (Honolulu, Hawaii, Radford) was hit by the Ravens goalkeeper when going for a shot setting up a penalty kick opportunity for the Phoenix. Russ ripped a shot to the right side of the net and beat the keeper for a 1-0 lead. Defensively, the Phoenix limited the Ravens to just two shots in the first half. The second half opened with freshman Victor Celleri and sophomore Samuel Appiah (Kumasi, Ghana, Opoku Ware School) taking aim on the goal but the shots were saved by the Ravens keeper. Late in the match, the Ravens made a strong push to score but Perry came up with a couple of outstanding saves to seal the 1-0 win for the Phoenix.

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix held a 13-7 edge in shots and a 7-4 advantage in shots on goal. Offensively, the Phoenix earned 9 corner kicks to just 4 for the Ravens. Perry recorded 4 saves in the shutout and Ethan Russ scored his third goal of the season which is tied for first on the team.

Up Next: Wilson will step out of conference to take on Goucher College on the road next Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
