Men's Soccer Blanks Nittany Lions

ALTOONA, Pa. - The Wilson College men's soccer team opened the 2018 season with an impressive 6-0 road win versus Penn State Altoona. The Phoenix got a hat-trick from senior Aaron Russ (Honolulu, Hawaii) and an outstanding performance from the defense in the victory.

How It Happened: The Phoenix offensive attack came early and often as Aaron Russ fired a shot that was saved and immediately followed by a header shot by sophomore Silvio Andrade (Guayaquil, Ecuador, ) just six minutes into the match. A couple of minutes later, sophomore Samuel Appiah (Kumasi, Ghana, Opoku Ware School) found the back of the net with an assist from senior Ethan Russ (Honolulu, Hawaii, Radford) to put the Phoenix up 1-0. Midway through the opening half, Aaron Russ rattled off four straight shots, finally breaking through on the last as he took a pass from Andrade down the right side and beat the keeper from ten yards out to make it 2-0. Five minutes later, Aaron Russ dribbled past the keeper for his second goal of the match and pushed the Phoenix lead to 3-0 heading into the break. Senior Justin Vizzi (Spotswood, NJ, Spotswood) got the offense started in the second half as he tallied his first goal of the season with a tough sliding shot off of a cross from Appiah to make it 4-0. The Phoenix would tack on two more goals in the final ten minutes. The first would come as Aaron Russ capped off his hat-trick by dribbling through the defense and beating the keeper to make the score 5-0. The final goal of the match would come off the foot of sophomore René Quintanilla (San Salvador, El Salvador, Chambersburg) who took a deflection in the middle of the field and beat the defense for the first goal of his collegiate career. The Phoenix closed out the game with a 6-0 win.
