Phoenix Torch Vixens in Opener

SWEET BRIAR, Va. - The Wilson College field hockey team opened the 2018 season in impressive fashion with a 7-0 road victory over Sweet Briar. Sophomore Jenna Carty (Chambersburg, Pa., Greencastle-Antrim) and senior Mackenzie Bindas (Pittsburgh, PA., Burrell ) each scored 2 goals for the Phoenix in the win.

How It Happened: The Phoenix offense got going early as the team scored 3 goals in a three minute span. Sophomore Allison Reber (Narvon, Pa., Garden Spot) started off the scoring barrage with her first goal of the season with an assist from classmate Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa., Annville-Cleona). Shortly after that, Singer scored her first goal off of a rebound from her own shot to put the Phoenix up 2-0. Carty got in on the scoring act a couple of minutes later to push the visitors lead to 3-0. Offensively the Phoenix would continue to dominate as they posted four more shots and nine more penalty corners before the break, however the lead remained at 3-0 at halftime. In the second half the Phoenix again wasted no time in getting on the scoreboard as Bindas rattled the cage with an assist from Carty less than two minutes into the second session. Bindas would add her second goal of the match about seven minutes later to push the lead to 5-0. Senior Lauren Moss (Bloomsburg, Pa., Central Columbia) scored the first goal of her season with an assist from freshman Breeann Sheaffer (Middleburg, PA. , Midd-West) to make the score 6-0 Phoenix. Carty would cap off the offensive explosion by tallying her second goal of the match with an assist from Singer to push the final score to 7-0 in favor of the Phoenix.

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix dominated with a 21-0 advantage in shots, including a 14-0 edge in shots on goal. The visitors also held a 24-3 lead in penalty corners. Sophomore goalkeepers Brooke McLachlan (High Range, New South Wales, Chevalier) and Krista Nayadley (Hampton, VA, Hampton) combined for the shutout.

Up Next: Wilson hosts the annual Wilson College Invitational which features Earlham College, Sweet Briar College and Concordia University of Wisconsin. The tournament begins on Saturday, September 8 with Sweet Briar and Concordia at 12:00 p.m. followed by the Phoenix versus Earlham at 2:00 p.m.
