Express Speeds By Men's Volleyball


AURORA, N.Y. - The Wilson College men's volleyball team hit the road for the final weekend of the regular season with a trip to Wells College for a North Eastern Athletic Conference match this evening. The host Express (18-7, 6-1 NEAC) defeated the Phoenix (6-10, 1-6 NEAC) 3-0 by scores of 25-20, 25-12, and 25-17. 

How It Happened: In the first set the Express jumped out to a 6-3, but the Phoenix responded with 5 straight points that featured 3 consecutive service aces by sophomore Nick Baxter (Denver, Pa., Cocalico) to take an 8-6 advantage. Later in the set, junior Aaron Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa., Commonwealth Connections Academy) had a kill to tie things up at 11 a piece. A run that saw the Express score 7 out of 8 points put them ahead 19-14 and they would close out the set 25-20. During the second set, the Express grabbed a 7-1 lead to start. A few points later a kill by freshman Emelio Jones (Ft. Lauderdale, FL., Ft. Lauderdale HS) pulled the Phoenix to within 11-6, but the Express rattled off the next 9 points to take a commanding 20-6 lead and finished off the set at 25-12. The third and final set started off with sophomore Ian Firestone (York, Pa., York Suburban) getting a kill. Later in the set, back-to-back kills by Aaron Hoke tied the set at 7-7. Leading 14-13, the Express took control with 5 straight points for a 19-13 lead. The Phoenix tried to battle back getting kills from Baxter and Jones, but the Express closed out the set and match with a 25-17 win.

Inside the Box Score: For the match the Phoenix had 25 kills against 17 errors for a .093 attacking percentage, while the Express had 43 kills against 10 errors for a .398 attacking percentage. Aaron Hoke had a team high 10 kills and added 5 digs. Firestone had 17 assists and added 3 kills. Junior Evan Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa., Commonwealth Connections Academy) had a match high 9 digs while Baxter had 3 service aces and 7 assists.

Up Next: Wilson will close out the regular season tomorrow with a tri-match at SUNY Poly where they will take on the host Wildcats and Elmira College beginning at 2:00 p.m.
