Men's Volleyball Closes Out Season


UTICA, N.Y. - The Wilson College men's volleyball team played their final matches of the season this afternoon with a tri-match against Elmira College and North Eastern Athletic Conference foe SUNY Poly. The Phoenix (6-12, 1-7 NEAC) fell to the Soaring Eagles of Elmira (20-11) by a score of 3-1 (25-14, 25-17, 22-25, 25-16) and to the Wildcats (13-14, 5-2 NEAC) 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-21).

How It Happened Match 1: A kill by junior Zachary McMaster (Gettysburg, Pa., New Oxford) gave the Phoenix the early 4-3 lead, but the Soaring Eagles responded with 3 straight points before back-to-back kills by McMaster and and junior Aaron Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa., Commonwealth Connections Academy) tied it up at 6-6. A 7-0 run by the Eagles followed to make it 13-6. The Phoenix never got any closer as they pulled away for a 25-14 win in the first set. In the second set the teams again were tied early at 5-5, but the Eagles scored 6 of the next 7 to open up a 11-6 lead. A kill by sophomore Nick Baxter (Denver, Pa., Cocalico) pulled the Phoenix within 5 points at 15-10, but the Eagles were stretch their lead the rest of the way and close out the set 25-17. During the third set the Phoenix raced out to a 6-2 advantage with kills from Baxter and freshman Emelio Jones (Ft. Lauderdale, FL., Ft. Lauderdale HS). As the Eagles chipped away at the lead, they used a 6-0 run to go up 9-7 midway through the set. After some back and forth, the Phoenix pulled ahead 16-12 with a kill by sophomore Dan Perry (London, England, Okanagan Secondary). The Phoenix put some distance between them and the eagles and closed out the set with kills by Baxter and Jones for a 25-21 win. The fourth set saw the Eagles scream out to an 8-1 lead and they never looked back as they cruised to a 25-16 win in the set and closed out the match 3-1.

Inside the Box Score Match 1: Aaron Hoke had a team high 10 kills whiles Jones and Baxter each tallied 8 kills. Sophomore Ian Firestone (York, Pa., York Suburban) had 27 assists and a block while junior Evan Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa., Commonwealth Connections Academy) had 2 service aces and 6 digs.

How It Happened Match 2: In the NEAC match against the Wildcats the Phoenix held the early advantage. A kill by Baxter put the Phoenix up 5-3 and eventually the visitors were up 12-9. However, the Wildcats went on a 6-0 run to take a 15-12 lead but a pair of kills from Baxter kept the Phoenix within striking distance. A run that saw the Wildcats score 5 of the next 6 points put them in command at 21-15 and they closed out the set 25-19. In the second set the Wildcats jumped out to a 7-3 advantage. The Phoenix would chip away at the lead and a kill by Aaron Hoke and a Wildcat error pulled the Phoenix within 11-10. Again, the Wildcats gradually stretched their lead over the next several points and closed out the second set 25-19. Set 3 got off to a back and forth start as the teams ran out to a 14-14 tie. The Wildcats grabbed the lead at 20-16 but another kill from Aaron Hoke kept the Phoenix close at 20-17. Later, a kill be Jones pulled the Phoenix within 22-20, but the visitors would get no closer and the Wildcats won the set 25-21 and the match 3-0. 

Inside the Box Score Match 2: Baxter led the Phoenix with 9 kills while Aaron Hoke added 8 kills. Jones tallied 3 blocks and Firestone added 20 assists while Evan Hoke had a match high 10 digs.
