Men's Volleyball Lets Go of Two on the Road

READING, Pa. - The Wilson College men's volleyball team traveled to Reading, Pennsylvania for the Alvernia University Men's Volleyball Invitational. The Phoenix (6-4) played two matches. They lost the first match against the Alvernia Golden Wolves 3-1. In the second match, the Phoenix lost 3-1 again against the Wentworth Institute of Technology Leopards.

How It Happened: In the first match, the Phoenix fell to the Golden Wolves (9-8) by a score of 3-1. The Phoenix began the first set with an 8-2 run, but the Golden Wolves answered with a 6-0 run to even the score 8-8. Three straight service aces from freshman Carlos Jimenez (Miami Beach. FL.) gave the Phoenix a 14-9 advantage. The Phoenix lead increased to 17-13 as they maintained the upper hand to finish the set 25-22. The second set was even closer than the first. The Phoenix were in front 19-15. But the Golden Wolves pulled ahead and fended off the Phoenix's attempt to garner the lead again. After a tied score of 22-22, the Golden Wolves were the team to win the second set 25-22. In the third set, the Golden Wolves took an early lead and maintained their edge for a 25-17 win. The fourth set was an intense exchange for both teams. The Phoenix were winning 9-5, but a 5 point run put the Golden Wolves up 14-12. After two kills from Jimenez and one from junior Aaron Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa.), the Phoenix were back on top 19-18. The teams equalized the score a couple more times, but the Golden Wolves won set number four 25-22 for a 3-1 match victory.

In the second match of the evening against The Wentworth Leopards (14-6), the Phoenix lost 3-1. Scoring was even in the beginning of the first set, but the Leopards roared ahead with a six point run for a 10-4 lead. The Leopards slowly amplified their lead as the set continued, but the Phoenix started to rally with a 5 point run that made the score a much closer 22-19 Leopards. The Leopards outran the Phoenix and finished the first set 25-21. In set number two, the Phoenix started out on top as a kill from Aaron Hoke put the them up 6-2. Three back-to-back points for the Leopards got them within one point of the Phoenix 6-5. The Leopards pulled ahead 16-12 on a five point run. But the Phoenix wouldn't back down without a fight, and they took back the lead after two aces from sophomore Ian Firestone (York, Pa.), a kill from Jimenez, and a kill from Aaron Hoke. The set finished out neck-and-neck, and the Phoenix earned a 27-25 win. The Leopards took the third set 25-18 as they slowly but surely increased and maintained a lead, despite a strong effort from the Phoenix. After the Leopards took an early lead in the fourth set, the Phoenix turned the tables and one-upped them 13-12. Still, the Leopards managed to sprint away and take the win 25-18 for a total match victory 3-1. 

Inside the Box Score: In the first mach against the Alvernia Golden Wolves, the Phoenix had 33 kills against 26 errors on 124 total attacks for a .056 attack percentage. The Golden Wolves had 50 kills against 24 errors on 139 total attempts for a .187 percentage.

In the second match versus the Wentworth Leopards, the Phoenix had 8 aces opposed to the Leopards' 5. The Leopards had a better attack percentage with 50 kills against only 14 errors on 121 attempts for .298. The Phoenix had 44 kills against 25 errors and 134 total attack for a .142 percentage.

Aaron Hoke led the Phoenix in kills with 12 in the first match and 13 in the second. Firestone led in assists with 29 in the first match and 36 in the second. In the first match, junior Evan Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa.) led the team with 14 digs and Jimenez led in digs for the second match with 15. Sophomore Nick Baxter (Denver, Pa.) led overall in blocks today with five total between the two matches.
