Game Recap: Men's Volleyball |

Phoenix Bettered by Nitanny Lions on the Road

ALTOONA, Pa. - The Wilson College men's volleyball team continued conference play tonight at Penn State Altoona.
The Phoenix (6-5, 1-2 NEAC) hung tough against the Nittany Lions (9-10, 2-1 NEAC) but
eventually fell in straight sets, 25-19, 25-22, 25-14.

How It Happened - After a close start to the opening set some big blocks from the Phoenix front court of Nick Baxter (Denver, Pa., Cocalico) and Omar Abarca (Chicago, Il, Rickover Naval Academy)  saw the scores tied at 10. The set continued to go point for point as the Phoenix continued to scrap defensively, junior libero Evan Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa., Commonwealth Connections Academy) recorded 29 digs on the night against a well structured Nittany Lions attack.
Penn State Altoona managed to gain a slight advantage at 16-12 going into a Phoenix timeout in the first. The Nittany Lions managed to hold their lead and claimed the first set 25-19. Abarca continued to have a big influence early in the second set with two consecutive blocks to get the Phoenix back to 5-5. Baxter began to leave his mark on the game offensively with a couple of big kills before junior Aaron Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa., Commonwealth Connections Academy) chipped in with two of his own to give the Phoenix the lead at 15-11 going into the Nittany Lions first timeout of the game. The time-out seemed to spark the Nittany Lions into action as they fought back with some big blocks and persistent offense to regain the lead late in the second before going on to take it 25-22. The Phoenix started the third looking to start a rally highlighted by a kill from freshman Carlos Jimenez (Miami Beach. FL., FLVS) before the Nittany Lions again tied the set at 3. The Nittany Lions continued to show their discipline both offensively and defensively, going on a 9-2 run after the score was tied at 8-8 early in the set. Aaron Hoke had a couple of big kills as the Phoenix tried to fight back but the Nittany Lions had too much fire power taking the match in straight sets, 25-14 in the third.

Inside the Box Score - The Phoenix had a big defensive night against some powerful Nittany Lions hitters who had four different players with more than five kills to just two for the Phoenix. Baxter was effective in his unusual role at setter racking up 18 assists helping out Aaron Hoke and Jimenez who combined for 22 of the Phoenix 28 total kills.

Up Next: The Phoenix match-up at home against Medaille College on Saturday March 24
starting at  2pm.
