Men's Volleyball Downed by D'Youville

BUFFALO, N.Y. - The Wilson College men's volleyball team took on D'Youville College in NEAC competition. The Phoenix fell to the hosting Spartans in a five-set match 2-3.

How It Happened: The Phoenix (6-8, 1-5 NEAC) and Spartans were even on kills for the match, but the Spartan defense was strong enough to give them an advantage for each of the five sets. Junior Aaron Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa.) started off the scoring in the first set with a kill assisted by sophomore IIan Firestone (York, Pa.). The Spartans managed to get ahead after a number of errors, then they grabbed a solid lead after they were on the better half of a 7-3 scoring run. The Phoenix were behind 9-15, and the Spartans stayed on top to finish the set 25-19. The Phoenix won the second set 26-24. Scoring started out very close, but the Phoenix soared ahead with a four point run with kills by Aaron Hoke and sophomore Nick Baxter (Denver, Pa.) Another four-point run put the Phoenix even further ahead 17-11. But the Spartans caught up to the Phoenix and tied the score 24-24, but the Phoenix prevailed 26-24. The third set went to D'Youville 26-15. While the set started out even, the Spartans went on a scoring frenzy and established a strong advantage. They continued to dominate the set, and the Phoenix were unable to recover. The Phoenix responded by winning the fourth set 25-20. D'Youville started out ahead. It looked like the set might remain in favor of the hosting team, but several errors from the Spartans put the Phoenix ahead. The Phoenix attack remained strong for the set and gave them a win. The fifth set was the tightest of the day, but it went to D'Youville 15-11 and the Spartans took the match 3-2.
