Men's Volleyball Folds to Behrend

ERIE, Pa. - The Wilson College men's volleyball team took on Penn State Behrend in non conference competition this evening. The hosting Nittany Lions defeated the Phoenix by a 3-0 match score.

How It Happened: The first set started with the two teams an even 3-3 for scoring. The next phase of play saw the Nittany Lions taking the lead with a 7-3 run. The Nittany Lions got ahead, but the Phoenix came close to catching them with a kill by junior Aaron Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa.) that made the score 11-9. However, the Nittany Lions stayed in the lead for the rest of the set, winning 25-18. The second set was close. The Nittany Lions and the Phoenix were neck-and-neck for much of it. A kill by freshman Emelio Jones (Ft. Lauderdale, FL.) evened the score 8-8. The Nittany Lions then gained a slight edge, but a kill by sophomore Nick Baxter (Denver, Pa.) pulled the Phoenix within one point at 14-15. A five point run then gave the Nittany Lions an advantage they held onto for the remainder of the set, winning 25-19. In the third set, determined to fend off the Phoenix, the Nittany Lions worked to establish an early lead. The Phoenix kept a consistent offensive attack, but the hosts won the third set 25-19 and sealed the match 3-0.

Inside the Box Score: Aaron Hoke led the Phoenix in kills with 9 while sophomore Ian Firestone (York, Pa.) led in assists with 30. Junior Evan Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa.) led the Phoenix on defense with 15 digs. The Nittany Lions edged out the Phoenix with 41 kills against 19 errors on 101 attempts for a .218 attack percentage, while the Phoenix had 31 kills against 21 errors on 102 attempts for a .098 attack percentage.
