Tomcats Slink by the Phoenix

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. -The Wilson college men's volleyball team took on the Tomcats of Thiel College tonight in non-conference competition. The Tomcats (8-9) won the match 3-0. The Phoenix (6-2) fell by scores of 25-19 in the first set, 27-25 in the second set, and 25-23 in the third set.

How It Happened: The first set started out close with a 7-8 run. The Phoenix scored their seventh point on an attack from sophomore Omar Abarca (Chicago, Il) after recovering from a scramble on their side of the net. The Phoenix then tied it up 8-8. Shortly after, a sly kill from Thiel put the visitors up 10-9. A powerhouse of a kill from sophomore Nick Baxter (Denver, Pa.) evened out the score again 10-10. Thiel started to pull away from the Phoenix 16-13, but three straight kills from junior Aaron Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa.) made the score 19-18 with the Phoenix behind by only one point. The Tomcats recovered and finished the set on top 25-19. In the second set, the Phoenix started on a 6-3 run. An ace from Aaron Hoke gave the Phoenix the 6-3 advantage. The Phoenix offense fueled up and kept ahead 11-7, but the Tomcats started to gain on the home team within just one point from tying things up 12-11. The Phoenix held onto the lead for a while, but the Tomcats snatched it away to make the score 17-16 in their favor. They stayed ahead, but two separate aces from freshman Carlos Jimenez (Miami Beach. FL.) tied the score up twice. An intense battle at the net between attackers then ended in favor of Aaron Hoke as the Phoenix tied the score 23-23 again, but the Tomcats got the slight edge and won the set 27-25. In the third set, the Tomcats started on a 9-4 run and established a lead early on. The Phoenix fought back and tied up the score 11-11. The set stayed neck and neck; but again, the Tomcats pulled ahead with the slightest edge and won 25-23.

Inside the Box Score: Aaron Hoke led the Phoenix in kills tonight with 14. Sophomore Ian Firestone (York, Pa.) led the Phoenix in assists with 35. Jimenez recorded three aces tonight and led the defense with 10 digs.The Tomcats had 40 kills on 21 errors against 94 for a .202 attack percentage. The Phoenix had the edge on their attack percentage with 37 kills against 16 errors on 94 attacks for a .223 percentage.

Up Next: Tomorrow the Phoenix travel to Glenside, Pennsylvania, to take on Stevenson University at 3:00 p.m. and Arcadia University at 5:00 p.m.
