Mavericks Power Past Phoenix

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College men's volleyball team hosted the Medaille College Mavericks this afternoon in NEAC competition. The Mavericks (5-18, 1-3 NEAC) defeated the Phoenix (6-6, 1-3 NEAC) by a match score of 3-1.

How It Happened: The Phoenix won the first set 25-20. They started out with an 8-4 run. Although the Mavericks tried to trot up to the Phoenix by closing in on the lead 15-11, the Phoenix stayed ahead. A kill by sophomore Ian Firestone (York, Pa.) made the score 20-16 and set the tone for the remainder of the set, as the Phoenix added a tally to their win column. The Mavericks won the second set 25-22. The Phoenix scored the first point, but the Mavericks got ahead 4-1. The Phoenix closed in on the Mavericks' early lead after an ace from junior Evan Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa.) made it 4-3 Mavericks. But the Mavericks continued to increase their lead, until the Phoenix whittled it down and took the lead themselves after an impressive rally. A couple service aces from junior Aaron Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa.) put the Phoenix up 22-20, but the Mavericks took the win with the last few points 25-22. The Mavericks won the third set 26-24. While they started out ahead, the Phoenix tied it up early on 4-4 with a kill by sophomore Nick Baxter (Denver, Pa.). The two teams went back and forth. The Mavericks pulled ahead, then the Phoenix. Finally, the Mavericks got on top and stayed on top to take the third set. The Mavericks kept their advantage for the fourth set, which they won 25-19. The started out in the lead and stayed in the lead despite some strong attacks by the Phoenix. The match ended in favor of the visitors  3-1.

Inside the Box Score: The Mavericks had 41 kills against 16 errors on 84 total attacks for a .298 attack percentage. The Phoenix had 45 kills against 27 errors on 133 total attacks for a .135 attack percentage. Baxter led the Phoenix in kills this match with 14, Aaron Hoke recorded 5 aces, freshman Emelio Jones (Ft. Lauderdale, FL.) had 4 blocks, and sophomore Dan Perry (London, England) had 8 digs.
