Express Steam Ahead Phoenix

AURORA, N.Y. - The Wilson college women's basketball team lost in conference action against the Wells College Express. The Express (7-14, 6-6 NEAC) defeated the visiting Phoenix ( 9-12, 4-8 NEAC) by a final score of 62-48.

How It Happened: The Express started to gather up steam in the first quarter. They were first to score as they added three-points to their tally. Then junior Jordyn Day (Richmond, Va) added a three-pointer to the Phoenix count. The Express rolled along and established a 7 point lead going into the second quarter. The Phoenix made some strong plays to pull within just 1 point of their opponents. Junior Kristen Burdo (Norristown, Pa.) scored on a fast break after a rebound from junior Ashley Henderson (Upper Marlboro, Md.). Henderson and Day went on to score enough to put the Phoenix within 2 point of their opponents 26-28 at the half.

The Phoenix were close on the Express trail, but the Express finally pulled ahead once and for all in the third quarter. Freshman Michaela Singer (Annville, Pa.) landed a lay-up assisted by senior Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl). After that the Express established a 12 point lead going into the fourth quarter 45-33. The Express used their defense to produce offensive plays against the Phoenix in the third, and that momentum carried the hosting team to victory. In the fourth quarter Purvis' and Burdo's presence in the paint was a booster for their team's offense. But the Express rolled on to take the victory 62-48.
