Phoenix Fall to Penn State Abington

ABINGTON, P.a. - This afternoon the Phoenix (9-13, 4-9) tipped off against NEAC opponent Penn State Abington. The Nittany Lions (13-9, 8-6 NEAC) defeated the Phoenix 73-55.

How It Happened: The Phoenix started off in the lead with a 5-0 run comprised of a three-pointer from junior Jasmine Wallace (Detroit, MI) and a lay up from junior Lindsey Purvis (Fort Myers, Fl). However, the Nittany Lions pulled ahead with an eight point run. They outscored the Phoenix 20-9 in the first quarter. The Nittany Lions continued to push offensively, but the Phoenix didn't fade away as they stayed active in the paint. Junior Ashley Henderson (Upper Marlboro, Md.) scored a jumper after she stole the ball from an unsuspecting Nittany Lion offense, but the Nittany Lions still went to the locker room with a 15 point advantage 36-21.

In the third quarter, the Phoenix outscored the Nittany Lions 15-13 .Wallace got things going for her team with a three-pointer and a lay-up. While the Phoenix put more points than their opponents on the scoreboard in the third quarter, the Nittany Lions took back their momentum in the fourth. As the quarter progressed, the home team slowly but surely continued to build on their lead, ending the game 73-55 in favor of the hosts.

Inside the Box Score: The Nittany Lions outscored the Phoenix 18-6 in second chance points tonight. However, the Phoenix had more depth from the bench as they outscored their opponents in that category 15-7.  Wallace had a double-double tonight, racking up 19 points and 12 rebounds. Henderson was the only other Phoenix in double digits tonight with 11 points, while Shayna Rodriguez was the game's leading scorer with 22 points.
