Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Phoenix Roll Past the Wells Express

AURORA, N.Y. - The Wilson College men's basketball team grabbed a conference win on the road today against the Wells College Express. The Phoenix (15-6, 9-3 NEAC) defeated the Express (6-15, 4-8 NEAC) by a score of 86-67.

How It Happened: The game had a fast-paced start. The Express didn't respond quickly enough to the attacks from the Phoenix offense early on. In the first three minutes of play the Phoenix had two fast break scoring chances and capitalized on both. The Phoenix worked up to a six point lead, but the Express snatched the lead at the 10:42 mark 19-18. Another fast break from freshman Zachary Powell (Manassas, Va.) assisted by senior Willie McDowell (Baltimore, MD) set things straight for the visitors. The Phoenix completely derailed any plans the Express had to take the lead. A steal from senior Martez Beckett (Randallstown, Md.) that led to a three-pointer for Powell exemplifies the offensive and defensive prowess that came from the Phoenix. The visiting Phoenix went to the halftime break ahead of their opponents 42-33.

The Express churned their wheels against the Phoenix in the second half. The Phoenix racked up points from behind the arc to establish a strong lead, while the Express scored more in the paint. Freshman Cole Christian (Chambersburg, PA.) Martez Beckett, Powell, and junior Keion Adams (Gaithersburg, Md.) all added three-pointers to the Phoenix's total in the second half. The Express had a couple steals and some exciting fast break points towards the end of the game, but the Phoenix had already rolled to victory 86-67.

Inside the Box Score: Adams led the Phoenix in scoring tonight with a season high 23 points. There were three other Phoenix with double digits: Powell had 21 points, Christian had 13, and sophomore Rashaan Bean (San Antonio, Tx) had 10. The Phoenix outscored the Express 28-6 off turnovers, and they had 20 fast break points while the Express had 6. Overall, the shooting was even as the Phoenix had a percentage of 37.3 and the Express had 37.9.

Up Next: The Phoenix's next tip is at home on Wednesday against Penn State Berks at 6:00 p.m.
