Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Phoenix Deny Nittany Lions

ABINGTON, Pa. - The Wilson College men's basketball team hit the road for a North Eastern Athletic Conference match-up with Penn State Abington this afternoon. The Phoenix (16-6, 10-3 NEAC) held off the Nittany Lions (9-12, 7-7 NEAC) by a final score of 87-82. With the victory, the Phoenix maintain a hold on second place in the NEAC South Division standings as they make a push for their first ever post-season bid.

How It Happened: After a 5-0 run to open the game by the Nittany Lions, the Phoenix responded with a 7-0 run that featured buckets by freshman Zachary Powell (Manassas, Va., Osbourn) and juniors Ian Frazier (Palmyra, Pa., Palmyra) and Keion Adams (Gaithersburg, Md., Seneca Valley). Just after the midway point of the half, the hosts went on a 12-0 run to take a 27-20 advantage. However, the Phoenix battled back and two straight hoops by sophomore Rashaan Bean (San Antonio, Tx, Forest Park) put the Phoenix ahead 32-30 with under five minutes to play in the half. A three-pointer by Powell would be the last basket of the half and the Phoenix held a 40-35 lead at the break. Bean opened the second half by draining a three-pointer to give the Phoenix their largest lead of the night at eight points, however over the next several minutes the Nittany Lions clawed their way back into the lead at 56-55. A few minutes later back-to-back three-pointers by the hosts pushed their lead to 63-57 with under eleven minutes remaining. Powell then caught fire for the Phoenix scoring 8 of the next 9 points for the Phoenix that he finished off with an old fashioned three-point play. Adams followed with a layup and freshman Ian Hess (Orlando, Fl., Lyman ) drilled a three-pointer to cap off a 14-0 run as the visitors claimed a 71-63 advantage with 7:19 to go. The Nittany Lions weren't done though and cut the Phoenix lead down to one point at 78-77 with two minutes to play. However, the Phoenix were clutch from the free-throw line sinking 9 of 10 from the charity stripe to put the game away with a critical 87-72 victory.

Inside the Box Score: Powell led all scorers with 24 points, 16 of which came in the second half, and he tallied 8 boards. Bean added 19 points while Adams had 15 points and a game high 9 rebounds. Hess came off the bench to score 12 points and added 7 boards. The Phoenix held a 40-35 edge in rebounds.
