Men's Volleyball Flies Past Cougars

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - Tonight the Wilson College men's volleyball team took the Misericordia University Cougars in a non-conference contest. The Phoenix (6-1, 1-1 NEAC) defeated the Cougars (8-11)  by a match score of 3-0. The Phoenix won the first set 29-27, the second set 25-21, and the third set 25-17.

How It Happened: The Phoenix started the first set up 5-3, but the Cougars caught them and tied the score 7-7. Scoring was very close, and the two teams tied again 11-11. The Cougars rallied and pulled ahead, though, 14-11. The Phoenix took back the lead, and when they were up 20-17 the Cougars took a time out. The Cougars were first to score after the timeout, but the Phoenix took the next point. The Phoenix took the lead 23-19 but the Cougars tied the score again, 24-24. The end of the set was extremely close, but the Phoenix came out ahead 29-27. In the second set the Phoenix started up 5-3 again, but the Cougars clawed their way ahead. The score moved to an 8-8 tie after a service error from Misericordia tied the score and brought the Phoenix back within reach of the lead. The Phoenix climbed back up on top and pulled ahead 17-15 to prompt another time out from their opponents. The Phoenix continued to create effective offensive plays and put out strong defense to bring about a 25-21 victory in set two. The third set started with a 3-0 run for the Phoenix, but the Cougars managed to pull ahead after some close play. When the Cougars were on the serve receive late in the set, the Phoenix took advantage. A service ace from freshman Carlos Jimenez (Miami Beach. FL.) with his signature top spin was impossible for the Cougars to return. Sophomore Nick Baxter (Denver, Pa.) scored on a kill to make the score 24-17 and the Phoenix scored one more to win the set 25-17.

Inside the Box Score: The Cougars had 31 kills against 19 errors on 89 total attacks for a .135 percentage. The Phoenix, on the other hand, had 34 kills against 15 errors on 85 total attacks for a .224 attack percentage. Baxter led the Phoenix in kills with 12, and sophomore Ian Firestone (York, Pa.) had 29 assists. Junior Evan Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa.) led the Phoenix defense with 11 digs. The Phoenix edged the Cougars out in service aces 5-3. The Phoenix played strong defense with 4 blocks to the Cougars' 3 and held the advantage in digs 38-28.
