Phoenix Rise Up in Post-Season Debut

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - In tonight's men's basketball contest featuring Gallaudet University and Wilson College, the Phoenix soared to victory, advancing them to the prestigious final four of the NEAC. The Phoenix (20-6, 12-3 NEAC) defeated the Bison (9-17, 8-8 NEAC) by a final score of 75-73.

How It Happened: Both teams stepped on the court with their eyes on the prize, and the competition was close from the start. The Phoenix won the tip-off, but the Bison stole the ball less than a minute into the game and threatened to take an early lead. A defensive rebound from freshman Zachary Powell (Manassas, Va.) got the offense going for the Phoenix with a jumper from sophomore Rashaan Bean (San Antonio, Tx). Jawaun Jackson of the Bison put up a three-pointer in response which was quickly answered by junior Keion Adams (Gaithersburg, Md.). Jackson scored again, and this time it was junior Ian Frazier (Palmyra, Pa.) who responded with his first of what would be six three-pointers of the night. The Bison defense played aggressively throughout, and especially early on as they forced another turnover and Noah Valencia took it to the paint for two points. Both teams put up solid numbers from behind the arc in the early part of the half, and Adams and Frazier added two to the Phoenix tally for a 17-13 lead with just over 14 minutes to go. The Bison resisted as Valencia sunk a three-point bucket and stole the ball again to give his team a 20-17 lead. The Bison reached a six point lead 25-19 before the Phoenix called a timeout to regroup. Senior Willie McDowell (Baltimore, MD) then stole the ball this time and took it to net for a lay-up. McDowell went on to assist  Powell, who shot for three to put the Phoenix back on top 29-26. The Phoenix maintained their lead for the rest of the half. A dunk from McDowell after he stole the ball with less than a minute left helped secure a seven point lead for the Phoenix 41-34.

The second half went without a bucket for nearly two minutes until Frazier broke the ice with long three. The Bison defense stayed cunning even in the second as they stampeded toward the Phoenix try to to steer their way into the lead. Jackson stole the ball and handed it off to Valencia for a lay-up. Adams responded with a three-pointer. Valencia stole the ball again as the Bison continued to exploit turnovers. A three-pointer from Jackson pulled the Bison within range, trailing just 51-53 with less than 10 minutes left. Another three points from Frazier gave the Phoenix an eight point 63-55 lead, but the Bison closed in on the Phoenix again, making the score a close 70-71 with 37 seconds left. The Bison wanted the victory and they played three intentional fouls in attempts to take it, but the Phoenix prevailed 75-73.

Inside the Box Score:  Frazier led the way tonight with a stunning amount of three point buckets as he racked up 20 points while missing his target only twice when shooting behind the arc. Powell had a double-double tonight consisting of 16 points and 10 rebounds. McDowell earned 15 points tonight as well. The Bison shot 43.3% in field goals and the Phoenix edged them out with a 44.1 percentage. The Bison had the clear advantage in second chance points over the Phoenix 8-4. But the Phoenix made 13 field goals from behind the arc tonight to set them apart from their opponents who scored 9 in comparison.

Up Next: The Phoenix will square up against Lancaster Bible College on Saturday in the NEAC semi-finals.
