Chargers Stomp the Phoenix

CHAMBERSBURG, Pa. - The Wilson College men's volleyball team played their first home game of the 2018 season against NEAC opponent Lancaster Bible College. The Phoenix fell to the Chargers in 3 sets and dropped their first conference match of the season by scores of 25-15 in the first set, 27-25 in the second set, and 25-16 in the third set.

How It Happened: The first set went by quickly as the Chargers pulled ahead 10-5 before the Phoenix called a time out to recollect. The Chargers continued to stampede past the Phoenix and took the first set 25-15. In the second set the Chargers started out with 7-1 run. After a return error for the Chargers on a serve from sophomore Dan Perry (London, England) and a service ace from sophomore Nick Baxter (Denver, Pa.), the Phoenix started to gain on the Chargers, lessening the point margin to only 10-6 in favor of the visitors. A couple plays later junior Aaron Hoke (Chambersburg, Pa.) made an attack that the Chargers just couldn't block as the Phoenix continued to gain on their opponents. The Phoenix closed the lead down to 21-18 Chargers after a serve from Perry that the visiting team couldn't muster enough finesse to return. After a timeout, the Phoenix stepped back on the court and scored first. Freshman Carlos Jimenez (Miami Beach. FL.) spiked the ball to bring the Phoenix within one point of their opponent 21-22. The Phoenix rallied to tie the score 22-22. The two teams were neck-and-neck on the race to victory for the set, but the Chargers pulled out a 27-25 win. In the third set the Phoenix had an early 6-4 lead. The set started out close, but with a win in sight, the Chargers started to gallop ahead and the match ended 25-16.

Inside the Box Score: The Phoenix had 24 kills against 21 errors on 77 kills for a  .039 hitting percentage. Jimenez led the Phoenix in kills with 10 while sophomore Ian Firestone (York, Pa.) led the team in assists with 20. The Chargers had 35 kills against 7 errors on 61 total attempts for an attack percentage of .459. Statistical leaders for the Chargers this match include Nate Miller who led in kills with 19 and Kaleb Ansell who led in assists with 33.

Up Next: The Phoenix play at home tomorrow at 10:00 a.m. against the College of Saint Elizabeth.
